A Jordan River question ...
#1
I drove by the Jordan River today, and around the 35th south area, a thought came to mind - I wonder how many people have tried to or do fish the northern half of the Jordan River. Say, from Murray north to the Salt Lake.

I have to confess, I have - several times. My best, largest, and most interesting catch - was a shopping cart. I took part of it home as a trophy(the whole thing wouldn't fit on my bike) the rest of it, I released in a dumpster.

Now the question:

Where(as in location on the Jordan river) has anyone fished, that you know of, and, what did they catch ?

I have heard of people catching pirranna(sp?), alligators, and other exotics(some of which I think are only urban ledgends) but, here I am refering to the "regular" kinds of fish.

I can't help you with fishing tips, but I have seen the news when they have reported on pirhana & alligators in the river. The alligator I saw was only 2-3 feet long. You probably have a better chance of catching a dead body than any alligators [crazy]. It seems that someone finds one down there every week. Good luck.

I actually used to fish it down below 35th. That is untill my good spot got over ran with folks who like to keep everything they catch.[Sad] Last fall I didn't even bother with it. Most of the fish(including carp) had already been caught or spooked outta there. Who knows, though. Maybe this spring, if them people have finally gone away, the fishing will get half decent again.

In that single spot, I've caught Channels, mudders, white bass, walleye, large mouth, utah suckers and of course the infamous carp. My biggest fish out of that section have been about a 3 pound Whitie(1/2" off state c&r record dangit!), 28" Walleye that went bout 8 pounds or so, 26" Channel cats(I've actually gotten quite a few of those) as well as great big fat carp(some up to about 15 pounds.)

It all pretty much matters on what you use for what you'll catch. I've caught most of my fish off of little silverish gitzits. The whites, walleyes and carp seem to like that. I've gotten all of them off worms, although suckers and carp take them most, and the channels and mudders have come off of sucker and carp meat. BTW, sucker works the best.

It wouldn't surprise me to see anything come out of that river. I've seen goldfish swimming around in it quite a lot. Never pirana or aligators, though. It might be cool to catch a pirana out of there. Who knows. If their there they might even take a bite out of them dang hook and cook fisherman that invaded me last summer! Oh, sweet justice!

I have caught white fish and catfish at the 64th South area. I know that some others have caught rainbows in there. Even though there is pressure from other fisherman, there seems to always be fish.

I was fishing it near 90 south before they put that golf course there and caught a three foot eal. The face of it looked like something out of a fantasy novel cause it had a real flat head and one long tooth sticking out on each side like wild boars do.

That's awesome! I wish I could catch one! I've caught salt water wolf eels before, but never a moray or that size. I wonder if their still there?

Hey, Thanks to all you folks for the responses ! I was starting to worry that I might be the only one that can't go by a body of water without thinking about fishing it. It's nice to know I am not alone. I have caught the standard fare available there, but have heard rumors that other folks had caught some real interesting fish(somewhat exotic) and I thought - heck, maybe if there are some fish of interest I might spend more time there - I never have caught a pirhana(sp?), a giant goldfish/koi or one of the off-spring of the Loch Ness monster, and that eel thingy that was mentioned sounds really inticing for some reason.

Hey Micromaine - were you the guy that caught the pirhana(sp?) ? What were you using for bait ? A burger ? a neighborhood stray ? Your fingers ? If it wasn't one of your boby parts - where did you get it and how did you rig it up and present it for the pirhana(sp?) ?

I have fished it a few times west of North Salt Lake (near Bountiful). We have caught carp and mud cats.

So far all I've caught was one twenty inch bow, plenty of mudders, lots of suckers, and a few white bass. Worms do the trick.

Only thing I could add to this thread that no one else has mentioned yet is crappie . Still looking for a eye out of there . I have seen them there but they just don't like me .

About three years ago I tried the Jordan just north of 7800 South there by the railroad bridge. I was using a #2 Mepps & a brown that I'd have died for rolled the spinner just as I was lifting it out of the water. No real way of knowing but my guess is it would have gone 5 pounds. Went back another 4 or 5 times & couldn't get it to play.

In case you are wondering, I wasn't smoking anything & wasn't hallucinating either.

I've seen the size of some of those browns in the Jordan. My uncle caught one about two years ago that went 5.5 pounds. If I had a way to get pics on my computer I'd share him. That's one fish I had a camra for.
Since then we've had a few on, but nothing that big. BTW, no comment on the area he caught him. I've never seen another trout fisherman in the area.

I havent posted for a while. ( I have busy planning a wedding.) Hopefully I can get back to fishing soon. I have fished the jordan and have personally caught two walleye both under 15 inches. A few LMB & a rainbow. I have seen several browns swimming and did lose one right by the shore. I have also seen several white bass, bluegill & crappie swimming. The very first fish I ever caught out of there was a 13 inch walleye using a small silver & blue cast master in a deep hole. There are some good fish in there just have to target the right area's.
Peace and good fishing

This may sound like a stupid question, but does anyone trust eating anything caught out of the Jordan? Seems too dangerous and un-healthy to me.

Personally, I sure as heck wouldn't eat anything below 54th south. Above that I'm fine with it. If Rainbows can live in the water I'm sure its not toxic. But I know that down below 33rd south there have been sewage spills from the waste treatment plant on the mill creek, so I sure as heck wouldn't be caught eating anything from there. Thats another reason why all of my walleye I've caught from there are still swimming(hopefully).

Agreed ! I live right by the Mill Creek in South Salt Lake. I also treat everything in the Jordan River as catch and release - heck, I have been even hesitant to put my hands on some of the fish in there that I have seen and/or smelled. I have long needle nose pliers so I don't even have to get my hands wet. Still, I wouldn't mind catching a pirhana or something exotic from there - just for the experience of doing it. I suspect however, I will only pull in the standard fare of fish to be found in Utah.

About six years ago one of my buddies caught a cutthroat while we were ice fishing on Utah Lake near the pumps. I didn't think that I'd ever see that happen again, but the very next summer the same lucky SOB caught a cutt out of the river near the narrows on the other side of Thanksgiving Point. They most definitely were not the prettiest looking cutts, but they sure as heck were cutts. I would have never believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
