BIG CATS!!! Utah Lake 04/26/05
#1
Fished Utah Lake today.

Caught 20 channel cats ranging from 2-15 pounds. Biggest one was the first one I caught, I thought I had a new state record until I weighed it. Average Channel Cat caught was 5-7lbs.

Caught 7 walleye 2 under 20 and the rest were over 20.

Caught 5 bullheads.

Things are heating up! Water temp was 62 degrees when I got off the water at 8PM.

The fish are getting active, and aggressive, All channel cats slammed the lure/bait hard, and the walleye just sat on it for a second then gave dead weight.

First time I have ever hit Utah Lake and come home with a sore arm. Today was one of those magical days on the water where I just couldn't keep the fish off my hook.

I should have taken my digicam!

[cool]You've got to be kidding, Craig. No pictures?? That sucks! Mike called me right after you called him and told me about the monster cat. Nice job out there! How big was your biggest 'eye? I need to get up to Lake X to get me some good bait for Utah Lake, since cat season is approaching. For the next two months it's only gonna get better for the kitties. I'm hoping to make it down there on Saturday May 7th, and probably again on Wednesday May 11th (my birthday-always have a kitchen pass to fish on my birthday!)

[cool]I'm not CBR, but since he's a friend of mine, I'm guessing he probably didn't say EXACTLY where he was fishing so that the next time he goes to the spot, there won't be 30 boats/tubes/pontoons anchored all around it. He might tell ya what he was using though, and most baits/lures that work well on one spot on Utah Lake will work well everywhere else on the Lake.

Nice catch CBR, what a good day on the water. It's one of those rare days allright, for one person you did awesome. Water temp up to 62 degrees is a good start on this fishing season. Once the water hits that 60 degrees mark the fishing sure can get good fast. Thanks for the report. WH2

I had two rigs, one was a simple perch meat under a on the bottom. Then the other rig was a white 2 inch white curly tail with a 1/4 oz red jig head under a bobber on the bottom retrieving really slow. When I would hook up with the curly tail it seamed like clockwork that I would hook up on the other. I have several doubles. The fish are schooling so if you see someone hooking up with one try casting near where they hooked up and retrieve slow.

I was at the bubbleup tied up to the markers.

There are always 30 boats where I fished on Utah Lake so it is no secret this time around. The amount of fish there is SICKENING. They are stacked up everywhere. My only guess on the white bass not being there is that there were so many big predators they were stearing clear.

Biggest Walleye wasn't HUGE but 24 inches. BTW the female I kept had no eggs which is a great thing!

Nice CBR!! Glad you were able to do so well at the Bubble-Up. I grew up fishing the bubble-up since I was like 12 years old! I think my new home base Utah Lake spot will now be Lincoln since I live in Payson now.

CBR, was that you in the green pontoon? If so I was the one at the west end in the Skeeter. Next time I will come over and visit.

The perch show up more often in Utah Lake in years of high water. Back in 1997 -1998 when there was a lot more water in there, I caught quite a few yellow perch along the Provo Airport dike about this time of year into early summer. I also caught a lot of bluegill and a few bass along there as well as a 10 lb. channel cat. When the water gets high enough to reach all the way to the dike, even the white bass come around there and one year some were spawning off the Northwest corner of the dike, where it's a bit rocky. This year though, the water hasn't quite made it up to there yet, but maybe it will if we get another winter like this one next year.

Keep in mind the run off just started and they have been letting water go into the jordan river. The water has come up another half foot since my last outing to Utah Lake couple weeks ago.

Once they close that up we should see some record water depth at Utah Lake. Or so I have been told. Smile
