Catfish Drought Ends!!!!
#1
[#505000]The weather was so nice the other day I made plans to end my catfish drought today after work. I was dismayed when I saw the weather report last night that told me another storm was rolling in and it looked like it was going to mess up my plans to catch a catfish yet again [mad].[/#505000]

[#505000]When I got home from work the skys were looking gray and it looked as if I as going to have to call the trip off. I though about it a little more and decided to go anyway. I won't let much stand in the way of any opportunity to fish. [sly][/#505000]

[#505000]I took my new and improved homemade rotten steak stinkbait and drove out to Lincoln Beach. I was happy to see I had the whole place to myself (it was actually kinda creepy [Wink]). I was also encouraged by the fact the entire carp population of Utah Lake was rolling on the shoreline. [/#505000]

[#505000]The lake was really really rough so I fished the boat launch where it was relativly calm. It was sprinkling, windy, and a little chilly. I wasn't terribly optimistic about my chances to hook up a catfish. [crazy][/#505000]

[#505000]I tossed both my poles in the water and set up my chair. About 10 minutes after I arrived I got a good hit and started to bring in a sizeable carp. Realizing he was about to become bait he managed to break a poorly tied knot on my leader and got away (I hope I never find that guy who tied that crappy knot!!) . I got a few more hits, that I was unable to seal the deal on, and then I finally hooked into a decent sized Channel Cat.[/#505000]

[#505000]The cat was 21 1/2 inches (A slot catt [Tongue]) and went for my rotten steak. By this time the weather had started to really turn sour, I was cold, soaking wet, and the action had died down. I called it a day and Mr. Catfish came home with me to be dinner.[/#505000]

[cool]Hey, congrats on your first channel cat, svpdgcar! It feels good to finally get that cat skunk off, huh? I got my cat skunk off last year, and it was great! Make sure you try TubeDude's kittie krispies recipe on that bad boy. You won't be disappointed!

I'm really looking forward to the floatilla on the 7th of May to (hopefully) finally get my walleye skunk off!

Hey man congrats! I LOVE catching the Channels. They put up such a huge fight, and sometimes in the summer they even jump out of the water like a big rainbow! Plus the sheer size -- oh I can't wait to get out.

After talking with you at work and seeing the weather change I was surprised to see you still go out. Good for you, I'm jealous. Let me know how the fillet job and catfish dinner turn out.

[#505000]If all goes according to plan he should be eaten tonight. As far as the fillet job goes it was both much tougher and easier than a trout. [/#505000]
[#505000][/#505000]
[#505000]Easier in the fact there are no bones to worry about in the fillets themselves. Harder because near the head he was VERY bony I had to start down lower than I would on another species and I missed two good sized chunks of meat around the head I couldn't figure out how to get off. [#505000]I was a little irked the storm rolled in. I had some great action until the main body of the storm arrived. The escapee carp, and the catfish both put up a great fight, both fish gave my drag a real workout. [sly] [/#505000]

Do a search on BFT because if I remember right Tube Dude did a post on filleting catfish, as well as other posts for other fish.

[#505000]I took care of the dishes right after the picture [blush]. I had to so I could fillet him in that sink. I didn't know you fished. We'll have to get together some this spring/summer and knock'em dead, either that or knock'em and release em!! [Wink]
