[red] I took my boat out to Willard today for a check outrun and some fishing. The boat ran fine , but I can't say the same for the fishing. I had some really strange hits and after reading some of the posts from MGB and others, I haveto agree that it seemed like they were ramming the lures. I tried everything that I thought would work and just couldn't buy a bite.[/red]
[#ff0000] I tried the imfamous Producer, Tail dancers shadraps, jigs with curly tails and evey color in the rainbow. I guess that it just wasn't my day for fishing today, so I think it is safe to say that the skunk is still around. Water temp started out at 58 and was 62 when I left. Trolled between 3.0 and 3.5 mph, and varied my depths . I finally gave up around 3 pm, but I will say that the Willard bugs are doing very well. That was just the first day , plenty more to come.[/#ff0000]

[cool]Well, if it makes you feel any better Dan, I noticed tonight that there was a full (or almost full) moon out, so I'm thinking that our warm water fishy friends are pigging out at night, and not as active during the last day or two. That would explain how slow it was for CBR and I out at Linden yesterday.

[black]I haven't managed a single wiper on a producer this year. So, I guess the timing for them to stop making them was pretty good. Oh, I just remembered, I did get one hit off one. But it hit fast, hard, and busted my leader .... that's one less pressous producer in my box.[/black]

That theory is correct. The full moon did put most fish out of whack, Saturday @ Utah Lake was dreadfully rough all around. Noone was catching a thing, only heard of 1 walleye caught and we only picked up a couple cats.
Sunday was pretty hard aswell due to the full moon and boat show up there. We arrived and launched at 6am before any other boats weer there. We were there til 6 PM trying for bites. Total tally was 3 slimers and 2 smallmouth. Only saw a couple other fish caught.

[red] Hi KoKaneeReaper, you know I think you might be right about the speed being to fast. I did slow down to about 2.5 mph but never got below that. Oh, well I'm ready for more action. Bring it on.[/red]

[red] Hi there Out4Trout, hey I think that you're right about the Moon phase. The hits were very strange, to say the least. like a hit and run tactic.[/red]

those wipers hit like that when you are running to fast. if you start getting consistant strikes try stopping and casting. let the lure, im assuming shad rap or producer fall to the very bottom. hold your pole tip high and real as slow as possible just so you feel that thing wiggling a bit. pull it up the water column so you can figure out there depth. they wont hit it real hard when you do this they will lay on it. but it works done it a zillion times.

[red] Hi Xman, I'm going to try the Wipers again this weekend and do it the way you suggested. I never thought about casting. But I will give it a try. Thanks for the ideas.[/red]

given the nature of wipers though they might be back to their ole selfs and hitting like a sledge hammer come this weekend too but in case you are getting short strikes that is a good way to try and get them to lay on it and more hookups. they key is really location and depth. marking fish moving through good bet to cast there see if you can pick them up on passing. find the depth. i found on high water in willard when they are "inactive", or lethargic they like to hang towards the bottom a bit more. though i have no scientific data to back this up, i can say from my experience thats where i would get bites more is running closer to bottom. if they seem in the upper part of the water column seems they are feeding more and shouldnt be to lethargic, yet they can be and works well to run it slow at mid depth and pulling quickly upwards on the producer and let it fall kind of like a jig. this works well to sometimes. good luck out there.

Kokanee reaper hit the nail on the head. If you want to catch the fish 2 mph was the key. We had a very good night doubles triples you name. I just wish I would of kept track on how many we caught. Check out pic of this small walleye.

I got a sugestion for you to try out the this weakend. When youre trolling start using some S's in your patern instead of the straight line and pay atention to what polls are piking up the fish if the inside one is doing the trick slow down if the outside is hitting speed up when you use the S patern it makes the outside lure speed up to cach up to the boat and the inside one slows down sense you are turning into the bait I use heavy turns to pinpoint what the fish want and also a gps to mark the speed when i finde what speed they like for the day once you get the speed it's just a matter of time before you get youre limit. A gps whith a mph indicator is worth its weight in gold at willard hope this helps bud and good luck this weakend
