Deer Creek 5/21/05
#1
This is a late report since I had to work and other things over the weekend. I had the chance to hit up Deer Creek from 8:00-12:30 last saturday. I noticed there was a full moon friday night and I wasn't very motivated to go but since I wanted to explore and investigate all this new water filling up 20-30 feet in spots where last year was very bone dry. I got very excited about all this new water filling up the island and the east dikes by the road which would be a beneficial habitant for those smallies who were definitely stressed by the lack of habitant and water last year.

I was very fortunate to get the last avalible parking strip for my vehicle and its trailor! I started out at the island ramp, they have not put in any real boat docks yet, just one dock strip that's it. Went trolling at super slow paint drying speed, just taking my time to get around. Went around the island, along the road dikes, along the reeds, and staying in anywhere from 8 to 30 feet of water. Went in where the Provo River pours into Deer Creek. I went all the way around the bend to the other side by the railroad tracks. Again at paint drying speed.

It was a very slow day. I had two solid hits but nothing else however I did manage to boat 2 small walleyes, about 15-18 inches. I didn't really mark any fish on the sonar, but I have a very good feeling that the eyes were just very sluggish from their messy dining out the night before on a full moon table fare.

I went for trout just for the heck of it since I heard a friend boated two trout earlier, I couldn't get them to hit my lure and spinners. I guess walleyes ate them... LOL

It was a beautiful day on the lake. Rule #1 Never go fishing during the bright daylights after a full moon the night before... it always sucks! This lesson I have learned too many times but I still go out and fish anyways... I like being out on the water even if the fishing sucked.

But its always go just ta get out and soak a line, right? Great to hear the water is up too!! I havent been past DC in a while but it looked like it was doing ok for itself the last time I past it..

Paul, that sounds just like my experience at Strawberry saturday. They must've all pigged out during the night with the full moon.

next time you decide to lower yourself and go for trout, try pop gear and worm. lol thanks for the report on the lake! i seriously almost always do well for nice bows at deer creek with pop gear and worm. a couple of weeks ago they were hanging at 15-20 feet deep in 30-40 feet of water. they were easy picking with lead line, downriggers, and a 20 foot jet diver. how big do the walleye get in there?

I fished Deer Creek this saturday with my son. It sounds like we fished the same area we started at about 1:00 and got blown off at 5:30. There is alot of wood submerged in the water and hopefully there are a few perch in there to do some spawning. We bottom bounced until the wind came up with no success. Then we hid behind the island and tossed jigs. Caught 1 smallie. It was a little bit slower than I had hoped it would be. The walleyes should be hitting the flats and strapping on the feed bags. Theres always next time.
