FLW Outdoors, the world's leading marketer of competitive fishing, announced Thursday that the Wal-Mart Texas Tournament Trail presented by Frito Lay will return in 2003 with a Texas-sized purse of $1 million. The trail, which is entering its third season, will make four stops in the Lone Star State and one in Louisiana, bringing big-time fishing action to Texas' 1.3 million bass anglers.

The first stop will be on Lake Amistad near Del Rio, Texas, March 8, followed by a visit to Sam Rayburn Reservoir near Jasper, Texas, April 5. A two-day tournament is scheduled for May 10-11 on Lake Lewisville near Lewisville, Texas, and the regular season will wrap up June 7 on Toledo Bend Reservoir near Many, La.

Pros will compete for a share of a $145,000 purse in qualifying events, while co-anglers will duke it out for a piece of a $60,000 prize. Pro winners receive a guaranteed award of as much as $10,000 cash plus a new Ranger boat powered by Evinrude or Yamaha and can earn an additional $20,000 in Ranger contingency awards for a total prize package worth $65,000. Co-angler winners receive $4,000 and can win a new Ranger boat valued at $30,000 if they meet Ranger contingency requirements.

The $195,000 no-entry-fee Texas Tournament Trail Championship is set for Oct. 18-19 on Lake Ray Hubbard near Rockwall, Texas. The winning pro will earn as much as $70,000 in cash and prizes, while the co-angler champion will win as much as $40,000 in cash and prizes.

Ranger Boats will also offer $5,000 to the highest-finishing Pro Division angler who meets Ranger Cup qualifying guidelines.

“We are thrilled to offer Ranger boat owners competing in Texas this kind of opportunity,” said Bart Schad, senior vice president for Ranger Boats. “Our goal is to not only provide our customers with the best possible product but to also provide them with unsurpassed owner benefits.”

To qualify for Ranger contingency awards, pros must be owners of a Ranger boat that was purchased new from a Ranger dealer, and they must fish from a Ranger boat during the tournament. Co-anglers must be Ranger boat owners to be eligible for contingency awards. Additional guidelines apply for Ranger Cup eligibility. Entry fees for qualifying events are $350 for pros and $100 for co-anglers.

Early Texas Tournament Trail entry for Ranger owners begins at 8 a.m. CST Nov. 18. Champion and Stratos/Javelin owners may register beginning at 8 a.m. CST Nov. 19. Tournament entry opens to the general public at 8 a.m. CST Nov. 20 Priority will be given to anglers who enter all four qualifying tournaments by Nov. 22.

Travis Boating Center, one of the nation's largest retailers of Ranger Boats, will sponsor big-bass awards in 2003 as well as reward anglers who bought Ranger boats from their store. A $500 Travis Boating Center gift certificate will be awarded at all four qualifying events as well as the championship to the angler who weighs in the heaviest bass during the tournament. If the winner of the big-bass award bought his boat at Travis, he will also receive a $4,500 cash bonus. Travis will also award $1,000 to the highest-finishing pro or co-angler who purchased their Ranger boat at Travis.

Introduced in 2001, the Wal-Mart Texas Tournament Trail was the first high-profile tournament series dedicated to the nation's largest population of bass anglers. The trail is administered by FLW Outdoors, which also operates the Wal-Mart FLW Tour, the world's most lucrative bass-fishing series; the EverStart Series, known as a pathway to the FLW Tour; the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League for weekend anglers; and the Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Circuit, the world's most lucrative walleye-fishing series. FLW Outdoors will stage 162 tournaments in 2003 with a total purse of more than $20 million.

FLW Outdoors is the world's leading marketer of competitive fishing. Wal-Mart and many of America's most respected companies support FLW Outdoors and its five tournament trails.
