Sand Hollow is the best place for bass right now.

I'll be in the area this weekend as well. Going to have a little family trip to Zions and a few other places. I plan on hitting either Sand Hollow or Quail Creek tomorrow. Is there any shore fishing at all in Sand Hollow? I will not be bringing my tube.

i've found sand hollow to be a little tough from shore. it's hard to access the best spots. there are either too many people swimming where you want to be or you have to wade out too far on a VERY soft bottom.

How 'bout Quail? I'm interested in bluegill as well -- it's a family outing and I don't need any size or large bass, even a few small bass and/or a bunch of bluegill would be a lot of fun for me, my wife and our 11 month old son. We just need a place where she can sit on shore or very close to it in a camp chair and where I can catch something, anything. Any help/info would be appreciated. I assume just a tiny tube jig tipped with a small piece of worm or just a small piece of worm below a bobber would be the ticket for the 'gills. Thx.

I fished Sand Hollow on Monday with my flyrod from shore. It was fantastic. There is so much shoreline access on that lake that people aren't a problem. Just move away from them. We started on the south side of the lake (near the ATV unloading area -- Sand dune access). We were just casting in, and around, all the submerged sage brush. This is excellent habitat for those large mouth. We were catching lots of small bass, with enough larger (15-16") ones to keep it interesting. Eventually, the wind was too much, so we moved down by the south/west dam. We found about the same type of fishing along the dam, except a few more bluegill mixed in. After a while of that, we drove up to the boat launching area, and walked down to the shoreline north of the boat ramps. We found fewer fish here, but they were all the bigger bass -- none of the smaller ones in those coves.

The key is cover. If you can find an area with lots of brush, or rocky structure, you will find the bass. They are not picky. I caught bass mainly on wooly buggers, but I also caught a few on the surface with a grasshopper, and one bass on a big stonefly nymph. I don't think they care what you use, as long as you put it in front of them.

If you are able to fish the lake early, without wind, I would suggest using something that floats (floating rapala, grasshopper, etc....whatever your style is -- flyfishing or spin fishing). Cast to submerged brush piles. The dragonflies on that lake are coming off in clouds. Without the wind, those bass are taking anything that moves on the surface, or subsurface.

I read on another forum that if you can't catch bass at Sand Hollow right now, you should take up golf. There is alot of truth to that!

hey cat man, there are droves of bluegill at quail right now. i caught 20 in 15 mins the other day. just a small hook with a small piece of worm, i didnt even use a bobber, just cast it 5 feet off shore and let it sink. they are everywhere, you can watch em come up and take it. i was at the last pullout on the north end.

pbh, so i assume they are very shallow at sand hollow huh? yet deeper at quail? interesting. when you say the boat ramp are yu refering to the main on off the rocks where most of the people hang out?

yes -- the main ramp, on the rocks, where all the people go. Like I said, fewer fish in this area (along with more people), but more of the 15-16" bass...

If it wasn't windy, I would head straight over to the south end by the ATV staging area and find myself some shoreline without people, and start casting....
