POP GEAR SIZE
#1
[red] How do I determine which size of Pop gear to use, for example at Echo, the Gorge or Strawberry?[/red]

my favorite pop gear is by far giant cowbells in half silver half gold. ford fenders are also pretty effective at the berry. good luck to ya.

Try small and if necessary work up to larger. If small will work it is far more fun reeling in the fish. I have found that a small dodger or flasher often works as well as pop gear, and they provide far less drag.

For the Berry I use ford fenders back when I used pop gear . Gold /silver . Which is fairly big but it works for kokes and cutts . I do like the dodgers / flashers too . Most will work but some better than others at times . You will get a work out from reeling in fish on bigger stuff . So how did you do at echo this weekend ?

if reeling in heavy pop gear is a concern to you try macs flashlites. they work pretty good and cause hardly any pull. i also attach my pop gear straight to the downrigger weight sometimes. then i use a stacker release to clip on a few feet above that. then you can run your line back over the top- either with a lure only or with a small flasher. ive found that this setup works really well if your 20 feet or deeper. if your under 20 feet you may need to run your line back a ways to escape the motor noise.

[red] Thanks for the info Randy. I was going to take my boat up to Echo but had a lot of trouble with my kicker, craps out on me a lot . I am going to replace the whole Ignition system. Coils are shot and the points had never been changed. So It;s getting a once over.[/red]
[#ff0000] Anyway I went with my Brother-in-law and my nephew. We did pretty well several Browns and Rainbows in the 20-24 in range. Got really wacked a couple of times but never saw them. Speed was 1.8-2.5 mph, I think the water temp was around 60 degrees or so can't remember was too busy having fun. Was a great day on the water. All fish were returned for another day of fighting. By the way we were long-lining J-13 split-back Rapalas in rainbow and brown trout colors.[/#ff0000]
