Train takes on car, wins

DAILY HERALD

An Orem man has disproved the age-old adage that "any day fishing is better than a day at work."
On Saturday night, the man wanted to go fishing near 2000 N. West Geneva Road in Orem and tried to get as close to the spot as possible, which involved driving over a couple of train tracks. [url "http://heraldextra.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=display_ads&file=index&func=display_ad&ad=00268360"][/url][Image: adlog.php?bannerid=208&clientid=192&...5bc3639622][url "http://adserver.harktheherald.com/adclick.php?n=a1d19a67"][Image: adview.php?what=zone:27&n=a1d19a67][/url]
His 1999 Ford Explorer became hopelessly stuck when it high centered on one of the tracks. The man tried in vain for at least 15 minutes to free his vehicle, said Orem Lt. Doug Edwards.
That was when, around 11 p.m., he saw headlights from a train bearing down on him and his Ford.
The man turned on the Explorer's emergency flashers and tried to alert the train engineer of his presence. But trains can take more than a mile to stop, and by the time the train's engineer could identify the problem, it was too late, Edwards said.
With nothing else to do, the man abandoned the Ford and moved to a safe distance to watch.
There was some fortune involved in that the Explorer was stuck on the track next to the one the train was traveling on. Consequently, the train sideswiped the SUV over and over and over again as the engine and cars in tow clanked by, slowly coming to a stop.
While the Ford was hammered to the tune of $3,000 in damage and had to be towed away, the man was uninjured except for a panic attack that was treated by paramedics.
The man later told Edwards he "couldn't bring himself to look (and instead) turned his back just before the collision."This story appeared in The Daily Herald on page D1.

[cool] [#505000]Dude is lucky it only damaged his vehicle. That stroy reminds me of that vehicle stuck on the tracks last year in California that killed a bunch of people when the vehicle derailed the train.[/#505000]

[#505000]I would take $3000 in damage to my vehicle plus more than likely a ticket versus a felony manslaughter charge any day!!![/#505000]

I know the area but I still can't figure out where exactly you would need to drive down on the tracks to get closer to the water. What's wrong with staying on the main road and fishing from either the bubble-up or the Lindon Marina?

[cool]Guess that's what he gets for driving a Ford! LOL![Tongue][Tongue] Seriously though, the Exploder has the lowest ground clearance in it's class.

[cool]Uhhhh...your joking, right? Hope so. If not, well, welcome to BFT/Utah and sorry about your ride. Good thing you got out of it in time after parking it there.

Frank I look forward to seeing the pictures. I am impressed that you stepped forward and identified yourself. I know several of us replied to your posts on wanting to catch some catfish. Have you gotten any cats yet?

[#505000]That was you??!?!?!?!?!? Did you get charged criminally?? I know the railroad is really big on trespassing if you look at their tracks the wrong way. I think I speak for everyone when I say we are gald it was only $3000 to your ride and not to you.[unsure][/#505000]
