Flaming Gorge
#1
Hey Guys...Would like info on fishing at the Gorge. I have lived in Vernal for six years, been to the Gorge many times, but have never fished it. I mainly am interested in smallies, but also salmon and trout. The area I am most interested in is the Sheep Creek area...Hideout Canyon. I have a good map of the Gorge...from the Fisn-n-Map Co. They show a boat camp called Hideout Canyon. Is this a place you can beach your boat and pitch a tent? Thanks in advance for any info.
PS...Hey DoninDenver, if you need a fishing partner for the Gorge, I am most always available.[Wink]

Hay Rappo I don't have much knolege about smallies
or the george eather, I heard the best fishing is on the wyoming side and I know there are a lot of good camping spots up there where you can have your boat and your truck toghether if you want. I too have flaming george questions but don"t know how to start a new post to ask I can only reply, duh. How do you start a new question?

Hi Sandy-

Good to hear from you. I'll keep you in mind for the times I go up by myself.

Yes, Hideout is a boat-in tent camp. The fishing for the bigger smallmouth is better in Wyoming, but you can catch a ton of fish on the broken rock and flats in the Hideout area and you can get some decent fish if you're willing to wade through the dinks.

Sheep Creek and Hideout also hold kokanee and trout. It's a pretty part of the lake. You would enjoy it.

The south end of the lake is literally infested with smallmouth bass. Any where that you see broken up rock in the water will have lots of bass hanging out waiting for some poor unsuspecting crawdad to stick his nose out from under his rock then WHAMO. He's lunch.

It's a great place to take kids cause they can catch dozens of fish on a variety of lures.

Try brown or dark green tube jigs on 1/8 oz jigheads or panther martin spinners for the bass.

Trout are also east to catch there. Any thing with a worm on it will catch rainbows. The salmon are tougher to catch and pretty much require a boat for any consistancy. I've caught a few from shore thowing Jake's Spin-a-Lures in gold w/ red spots into deep water and letting it sink to 40'-50' before starting the very fast retrieve. It sounds like you have a boat so this doesn't really apply.

For more and better info on salmon, use the search feature at the top of the screen and start reviewing old threads that contain the word "kokanee". You'll have all the info you could ever need to wise up on them.

Have fun!

Hi Dave...Thanks for the info. I do most all my fishing from a boat. At the present time it is at Buckboard Marine, having a new Merc installed. Decided to get a 4-stroker, no more gas/oil to mix. I have a Gregor boat with remote. Hopefully I will be able to pick it up tomorrow. I will check old posts, have got some info there already.

Hi Don...Thanks for the info. I was thinking if I go up for a couple days I would throw my Springbar screenhouse in the boat and stay overnight at one of the boat camps. If my better-half goes along I take our 24-foot travel trailer and pull the boat behind the trailer. She doesn't like water too well, so she stays in camp while I fish. There is a cabin near the gorge that we are thinking about buying, and if we do I'll sell our travel trailer. A few days ago I dropped off my boat at Buckboard Marina, to have a new Merc installed, thought it might be ready today, but the control box didn't arrive yet. They have the motor and cables installed. I wasn't planning on being on the water this weekend anyway. When I was there Tuesday, they were bringing in some nice smallies, but at 11:00 AM the wind really started blowing with gusts at 50 to 60 mph.

take care,

The wind up there has really been murder the last month or so. It will be nice to have a new powerplant, I'm sure. Good luck.

Hey Don...The wind was really blowing at Buckboard, but it was a lite breeze at Sheep Creek Bay and also at Cedar Springs. Yes, it's going to be nice to have a new powerplant.

Have a nice weekend.
