I went out to Utah Lake with my girlfriend yesterday. She's never been fishing before in her life, so I figured I had my work cut out for me. Started out at Lincoln, not quite as early as I would've liked. We were out at Granite WAY too late the night before for me to want to get up early. I casted her out with a worm and minnow, and I got one pole out with the same and a carp and minnow combo. Then I went to work trying to restock my dwindleing carp reserve. There were a few in the little inlet we were fishing next to, so I broke out the good old bow and nailed one of them right in the head. Only problem was the dang thing pulled off imediatly sank.[mad] Danged fish! Strong buggers even when they've got a muzzy to the head. By that time Crystal was laughing her behind off. So I moved down a little bit and tried again. Same frecking thing. And now I was mad. I've never had that problem before. So I broke out my mini rod with 12# fire line. By then, though, the carp in the shallows had all gone away, so I had to go a little deeper for them. I started out off bank with my waders on. There were a few carp around 30 feet out. I started strait at them. At 10 feet away, I casted and got one right in the tail. He started running, and I started going after him. Around 10 steps later and I sank. I've never seen a drop off like that! I was way over my head. I managed to keep onto my pole(barely) and crystal came running out to help me up. She hit the same drop off and went down. I didn't figure we'd be swimming! So we headed back towards the bank. The carp had long since got into the reeds and gotten tangled up pretty good. So I just broke him off and decided to use minnows more than carp.
Then we finally got down to fishing. BOORING! The fish weren't biting at all. I managed to hook a couple, which I immediatly handed off to Crystal. She now has a White bass and a Walleye under her catch list. Finally, after 4 hours of sitting there with out a bite, I decided to drive us to Utah Lake state park. Got there around noon. Went down onto the north dike and casted us back out. Atleast the mudders were biting there. She landed 5 of them to my 3. We finally left around 3 when the wind got to be too much. I mean I like surfing, just not to try to fish.
All in all it was a great day. I loved getting Crystal out and catching fish. The best part was that she promised to go fishing with me again. I was just really glad to hear that.
