Fisheries Update
November 28th – December 5th, 2002
Happy Thanksgiving! 30 more days till Christmas! The re-opener of sturgeon season was much less spectacular than expected. Poor results were found in the gorge and only slightly better in the middle river. Fresh bait (shrimp) seemed to be the better producer. Crabbing in the estuary really can't get any better but crabbers using the area should be aware that the Hammond Boat Basin will be closed for a couple of more months. Warrenton Basin is open however.
The Sandy and Clackamas Rivers are really low and catches of winter fish are poor but there are still some summer fish being taken. Plunkers at Meldrum Bar are taking a few fish but the season is still a few weeks from really taking off. Rain would certainly help.
The McKenzie is beginning to become a nymph show. Only 200 winter fish have passed the falls but summer steelhead are still a viable option on some upper Willamette tribs. Tillamook streams are also low and clear and not many fresh fish are moving into the lower systems. The bay may be the better option for the weekend and driftboaters will likely be disappointed in the fine weather forecasted for the holiday weekend.
The lower Nestucca may provide some sport for late run fall fish and early winter steelhead as well. Three Rivers downstream would be the drift to try. Tillamook Bay is full of crab but most are small. The Siletz River has received a recent supply of chrome chinook. This surprise fishery can't hold up long however so don't plan on the same results as some of our guides- as mentioned in the long version of our report.
Steelhead are being taken by plug-pullers at the mouth of the Deschutes and John Day Rivers. Summer steelhead are being taken in good number on the Rogue. Detroit continues to reward trollers with trout. Rainbows were planted this week in Walling Pond and Walter Wirth Lake.
