Strawberry Narrows Trail Question
#1
I am hoping that someone could help me out here. I am planning on taking the Scouts on a campout this month and we are planning on hiking the Strawberry Narrows trail and camping somewhere along the trail. It has been many years since I have been through the narrows and I have not even seen the trail. The information that i have says the trail is 12 miles from Renegade to the Soldier Creek side.

My questions are: Is there any decent places to camp along this trail?

If anyone as been on the trail is it better to start at Renegade or Soldier Creek?

I am hoping to show the boys how to catch some crawdads and have a good old crawdad feast. Plus a little fishing.

Thanks for any help.

THE TRAIL IS A VERY EASY HIKE FOR THE MOST PART ITS FLAT WALKING. I WOULD START AT SOLGER CREEK SIDE. TO FIND THE TRAIL GO PAST DAM PAST MARINA UP AROND THE CORNER TO THE NEXT BAY TRAIL STARTS ON OTHER SIDE OF BAY. CANT MISS IT.

I have hiked that trail several times, but mostly in the middle section from my boat. The trail gets a fair amount of use.I have seen the trailhead from the regegade side however. If I remember correctly it is on the south side of the boatramp at or near the top. It is probably a three mile hike over hilly country until you enter the north end of the narrows. From there you go through aspen, oak, and conifers for most of the rest of the way to the south end trailhead. There are several designated primitive campgrounds there, nicer one right where a side canyon enters in from the west just a couple miles south into the narrows. Make sure you bring your own water or purifiers. I don't think you can trust some of the springs in the area for being totally pure. Having suffered the side effects of giardia and amobea dissentary, it ain't worth it.

That really will be an awesome scout trip. You have a chance of seeing just about any and all wildlife that country has to offer. And of course, take your fishing poles!!

One question I have about the trail is that some maps show a portion of the narrows is Indian Reservation land. Is this so or has that land been traded to the U.S. Forest Service. I have not seen any signs at all about it being Indian Land. If it is reservation land, does that mean you can't fish or hunt or camp through that section? MR. J.

THERE IS NO INDIAN ON THAT TRAIL. IT STARTS A LONG DISTANCE FROM THERE. HAVE FUN AND TAKE A PISTOL. PEPPER SPRAY. HANG YOUR FOOD. ALOT OF BEARS BACK THERE.

I don't believe it would make a whole lot of difference which end one starts on. The elevation would be the same on each end, so one direction isn't uphill and the other downhill. One consideration is whether you would prefer to hike the few miles through the sagebush (on the Renegade side) at the start of or the end of your hike.

I am leaning on going in on the Soilder Creek side. Since we will be going in and out the same way there is no use in trudging through the Sage Brush when you don't have to.

We are hoping to go in around 5 miles and find a camping site.
What I need to do is round up a boat and have the boys hike and we could troll the 5 miles, I think the boys would go for that[Tongue].

THAT IS A GREAT IDEA TAKING A BOAT. YOU CAN TAKE THE COOLERS AND TENTS WATER EXT. FISHING IS THE BONUS!!!!! YOU COULD ALSO HAVE CONTEST FOR BOAT FISHING TIME. HAVE SCOUTS COMPETE BUILDING FIRES, READING A COMPASS COURSE, PARE THEM OFF IN COUPLES. MOURNIG TRIPP FIRST PRIZE. EVENING TRIP SECOND AND DAY TIMES FOR THE REST. JUST A THOUGHT.

Those are good ideas. I may even try to fit in the Motorboating and Fishing MeritBadges.

Now I just need to find one of the dads with a boat willing to go. I really need to get my money pit running. Got to love boats

THERE IS ALWAYS AN ANSER... IF NO BODY WILL USE BOAT, RENT ONE... ASK PARENTS TO CHIP IN AN EXTRA 10 TO 15 BUCKS. SAY ITS JUST IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. TO GET TO HELP IF NESSASERY. ALSO FOR THE MERIT BADGE REQUIRMENTS. NO SWEAT. THE HARDEST PART OF GETTIG ASSISTANCE IS THE ASKING. GET IT DONE THOSE SCOUTS DESERVE IT...
