Howdy all! Well, I just got back into town after my Oregon vacation. I wound up leaving only a couple days earlier than my parents. I hate the stupid people that took my reservations at the Embarcadero. Oh well.
Started out at Bend fishing the Deschutes. After I got myself and crystal a year nonresident licence and salmon tags(which took out a large chunk of my spending money, around $200. OUCH!) we fished right outside our room. Began on the lower stretches of the river, and wound up high by night fall. I managed a dozen Redband Trout, non of which were over 14" long. All of them bit on either a small silver panther martin or a small brown trout pattern blue fox vibrax. It didn't seem to matter which I used. Went out the next morning to my truck to grab out my digital camra to get a decent picture of one of these georgeous little trout. It wasn't there. So I called up my mom and sure enough it was sitting on my dresser. By then I was cursing, and it was around 7, so I fished a couple holes and called it good. Only managed one redband that morning, anyway.
Made the 6 hour drive to newport and checked into the room. I didn't really feel like crabbing, so I went across the bay to Barview and got a couple dozen sandshrimp and some clams for fishing bait. Went back to the Embarcadero and started fishing a likely spot a the begining of the dock. Nothing. Not even a nibble. So finally we quit about 4 to get some food. Went and got Mo's fish and chips, and oyster chowder. What a mistake that was. Both of us got sick off the chowder. I spent the next couple days sick. Poor crystal was sick for nearly a week. I'm never eating their food again. Those few days I had a couple charter trips out of Depoe Bay that I had to cancel. Finally on the 22nd we left to meet my parents and my brothers and one of thier little friends at Bandon.
I was feeling a whole lot better, so I got cryss to bed then walked down to the beach with a little bait. I only had two bites, and managed to stick neither. I suspect they were either Redtail surf perch of little devil sculpin.
The next morning I went out on a morning combo salmon-bottom fish with the Barbara K. Old Ken was a nice as usual, and so was Brent. I really like them two guys. The salmon fishing was non-existant. The water temperature dropped from 54 to 46 degrees in about a day two weeks before we got there because of a major northwest wind. But the bottom fishing was uneffected; infact, it was the best that they'd seen in years. Started with 4 oz. jigs fished at around 150 feet deep. That day we limited on Ling Cod, and got a bunch of big Vermillions, Coppers, Blacks and Blues, all species of Rockfish. I also caught a 28" Yelloweye RF, and a few Canaries, none of which we could keep. The US Fish and Wildlife says that there are none these two species left in the Pacific. Yeah right. Their bigger morons than the Utah DWR. This year they've already closed down the Salmon and Bottom fisheries for the commercial fishermen. All that they can catch now is 300 lbs. of ling cod a month, plus their crabbing. Eventually their going to try to close down fishing on the pacific. Ok, moving on... The biggest ling I caught that day was 18 lbs, and my brother got one around 25. We also got 14 large Dungeness crab.
Went out the next morning with Ken and Brent again. That fishing was the best that I've ever had on the coast!!!! I cuahgt 4 keeper Ling Cod alone, one of which was 38 lbs, 48" long, another 32 lbs, 43" long. The two others were both around 28-30" long. The biggest ling came in on another ling cod, which is moderatly common. That's called a hitch-hiker ling cod. The ling he came in on was 23.5" long, so just under legal size. That day we limited on Ling, and got our 5 Rockfish, too. I also got a 18 lb. Cabazon. If you've ever seen them, you'll know what I'm talking about. They are one ugly fish, but their the best eating fish in the ocean. My littlest brother and his friend Carmen also got a biger ling a piece, both of which were around 20 lbs. That day we got 16 crab, too.
On the 25th crystal was finally feeling well enough to fish, so I took her over to the Coquille river jetty, just behind the lighthouse. Only caught crab. I had one fish break my line(most likely a ling cod) and crystal had two bites(I'd say kelp greenling, or sea trout).
Since she was feeling better, I booked one more trip out with the Barbara K. I limited on Ling, both around 15 lbs, and only managed one black and quillback RF. Crystal caught the rest of our rock fish, which included blacks, a huge vermillion, coppers and an unknown species. That day the seas were 6-8 feet with winds at 25-30 mph sustained. It was really ugly out there, but we still managed to do well. Best part was Crystal took it like a trooper.
For the rest of our trip, till yesterday(the 1st), we fished the Yaquina bay at Newport off of the Embarcedero's crabbing dock. Managed a bunch of little blacks and blues, with the occassional copper RF. The last night we were there the perch and sea trout finally started biting. We managed a limit of both easilly. I also caught my first salt water fish with a fly. Got around 20 blacks, 20 blues and a half dozen coppers with large white streamers after dark.
It turned out to be a great trip. It's one that I sure won't forget soon. I'm having the two lings mounted, seeming as how they were both the 2nd and 3rd largest fish I've ever caught respecivly. That'll probly mean that the vacation will be a lot shorter next year, but fish like that are worth it.
I would like to take this time and act as a poster boy for Prowler Charters, out of Bandon, Oregon. Their fishing is the best on the entire coast. Their catch numbers are the highest averaging in Oregon, and their captains are second to none. I've been out of a lot of places all along the Oregon and Washington coasts, from Westport, down to Bandon, and Prowler Charters have consistantly been the best for my family and myself. If you're interested in some fish like mine, give them a call. 1-888-347-1901. They offer Halibut, Bottom fishing, Salmon, Tuna, Crabbing and River tours. If you do book with them, tell them that the Jensen's from Salt Lake told you about it. BTW, the picture on the inside of their brochures with all the Vermillions is me and my family from last year.
Jerry
BTW, I have a pic of my two big lings, but I have to resize it first. It'll be on in a little bit.
