Help with an Evinrude tilt release
#1
I have a 1979 6 HP Evinrude kicker on my boat. When I purchased my boat I immediately put on one of those sliding bar locks for security. It made the outboard secure, but prevented it from tilting up, and as a result I have always had the drag of the trolling motor being in the water while running the main outboard. I recently took that lock off and attached a chain. The Evinrude will now tilt fine when I push down on the tilt release, but it appears that there isn't a locking mechanism to keep the outboard tilted up. Danzilla and I exchanged PMs regarding this, and he suggested using a short length of 1" dowel to hold it up. Last night I looked at it moe closely and it appears that if I used a dowel to hold it up that the dowel would bend and likely ruin the wire that is part of the tilt release mechanism. Have any of you encountered this situation, and if so did you come up with a workable solution?

If I am understanding you right you can keep your kicker motor tilted while useing the big engine???..If this is so I had the same problem with my 1973 Johnson 6 hp kicker..The only way I can keep it lifted is putting a rope around it and tieing it tight with the motor up..It holds it really well ,I need to take some time and make a bracket or somthing to replace the rope ..I hope it helps..Maybe we can put our heads together and figure somthing else out!

Lee of Lee's marine just sent me an email, and he recommended using a motorcyle cinch strap. I am going to give that a try, unless someone has a better solution.

I have the same motor as you do Kent and I had the same problem. The fix I came up with solved the problem and I don't need any straps or ropes. I bought another motor that has a built in motor tilt hold up. Want to buy a good used Evinrude 6 hp?

[black]Curt, not sure that would solve my problem -- sounds like it would only double it! Thanks for the offer, but I think I will stick with the strap solution for now.[/black]

One has to wonder what Evinrude was thinking when they forgot to add the parts necessary to lock it into the upright position.

[red] Hi there Kent, I have a 1968 Johnson 6 hp kicker on my boat and I have the same problem. My motor will stay up on it's own, but it does slowly drop down. I think that I will try that strap deal.[/red]

Hey there George, I really hadn't thought about selling the motor. I was just teasing Kent but I will send you a PM and tell you about it, maybe we can work something out. WH2
