need info on echo lake/joan lake(murdock basin)
#1
outdoor fanatic,

I found a post in the archives by you that talks about a backpacking trip you did into echo lake. could you give me an idea about the trail location how to locate it and what distances to the lakes there?

Anyone else have any info? I'm "guiding" a backpacking trip this weekend and I've never even been to this place...

d-mack, Echo Lake is located in the Murdock Basin. You can access it by road (pretty rough a couple years ago). There is also a way of getting into the area by way of the Fehr Lake trail and hiking a couples miles to Hoover and Marshall Lakes and then walk Southwest 3/4 mile and then West about 3/4 mile from Marshall lake. Another interesting way is to park on Highway 150 (mirror lake hwy) just before the summit and the first switchback turn, I'd Say about 30 miles from Kamas. You can then hike Southeast to echo and it's only about 1.5miles. If you have a good topo map you can easily see this route. I find it to be faster than driving that dirt road. No trail that way however, so a GPS would help a lot if your map skills aren't extra sharp.

Hope the information helps.

I'm not set on echo/joan. Is it nice at hoover and marshall lakes. are they fishable?? I think I'd like to stick to marked trails if possible. No desire to get someone lost in the woods. I don't worry about myself, but Windknot is pretty flakey. He could get lost in a city park.[shocked] (just kidding tom).

Thanks for the reply!!

Hey D-Mack
I have been to Hoover lake twice. Both times we drove the road in. Both times we saw some huge bull moose. So if you can handle a rough rocky ride then I would drive in. Also there are a bunch of wild rasberry plants that grow along some of the road. (not sure if they are ripe this time of year) The lake that I like best is Shepard lake at the end of the road. There is no road to it and no trail that I found, but it wasnt far from the other lakes. It was a nice lake that was deeper then the others up there, the fish were also bigger. We camped at Maba lake and caught a bunch of dink brookies. I fished at Hoover lake and did not catch as many fish. Hoover lake is shallow and hard to fish from shore. A float tube would have come in handy. While I was fishing at Shepard lake a family with some young boys had hiked in from the highway. They said it was about a 2 mile hike and they had followed a trail. So i bet that would be a good option if you wanted to hike in.
Good luck and let us know how you do.

Hi-

I've been to Echo/Joan several times, and several other lakes in the area, and many, many other lakes across the Uintas. Are you looking for fishing, solitude, aesethics, short hike, access from west end of the Unitas as opposed to South side or other criteria. It's short notice now, but if you rank your requirements I may be able to make a recommendation that'll fit your trip.

The DWR has booklets that list the Uinta lakes drainnages.
You will have no trouble finding and driving to Echo if you have a map.You will make a short uphill hike to get to Joan Lake. It is worth the hike. Not many people will be there and the view is awsome.

Do you have any idea how to get the "lake of the uintas" booklet that describes and gives information on most of the names lakes in the Uintas? I believe that the dwr produced it at one time but I can't find it on their publication list. Thanks, Chicken.

I have had my books for years and I don't know what the DWR has out now. Give them a call or check out their office if you are in the area.

When we went to Echo, we just parked right of the highway on the murdock basin turnoff. We could have driven most of the way in but it was kind of a practice hike so we just hiked along the road. I think it was about a 5 mile hike. We saw several people on ATVs and a couple in Jeeps. As far as the fishing... we had only a little success. I ended up falling through some ice that I thought was snow, and those fishing with me didn't have any luck while I was drying off and warming up. I think we were there too early in the season for good fishing. One of my neighbors caught some Golden trout up there 2 years ago. I don't have any experience with the other lakes in the area. There seemed to be plenty of brookies in echo, but I'm sure it's the same story everywhere else in the basin.
