CHAIN PICKEREL are being found in Lower Bolton Lake, Coventry Lake and Halls Pond.
TROUT
[#ff0000]ANGLERS ARE REMINDED THAT THE THERMAL REFUGE AREAS ON THE HOUSATONIC, NAUGATUCK AND SHETUCKET RIVERS ARE NOW CLOSED TO FISHING AND WILL REOPEN ON SEPTEMBER 1.[/#ff0000] From June 15 through August 31, all fishing within 100 feet of tributaries as posted by DEP (look for white signs) is prohibited.
Rivers & streams -Heat and low flows has slowed trout fishing in many rivers and streams throughout the state. Best reports are from the Farmington River (plenty of trout in the 20-25” range reported), also some fair action at the Salmon River TMA. Trout fishing remains slow on the Housatonic River with many trout in the thermal refuges. Low flows and hot summer conditions make early and late in the day the best fishing times. Summer is also a good time to try terrestrial fly patterns.
The Farmington River remains quite fishable. Water temperatures continue to range from the low to upper 60’s °F during the course of the day. Flows are clear, but somewhat low, about 160 cfs just below Riverton (Still River flows are very low, about 14 cfs). Farmington River anglers are advised that from Friday (8/12) through Sunday (8/21), West Branch flows may be lower (closer to 95 cfs) as there will be no releases for downstream power generation. Current patterns include Needhami (#22-26, early morning), Isonychia (#10-12, fast water, evening), Blue Wing Olives (#16-20, mid-late afternoon), Sulphurs duns (#14-20, in Riverton area only, morning; afternoon to early evening for spinners), Cahill/Stenonema (#12-18), Caddis (tan #16-18, all day; green #22-26, evening; summer pupa #18-20 morning), Midges (#22-28, morning), Black Ants (#14-20, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#16-18, mid day), Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid), Stone Hopper (#8-12, mid day) and Golden Drake (Potomanthus, #10-14). Evenings are bringing out a mixture of every bug on the water, although the current heat continues to delay activity until later in the evening.
Housatonic River water temperatures continue to range from the low to upper 70’s °F. Flows also remain low, down to about 160 cfs at Falls Village. Under these conditions, [#ff0000]ANGLERS SHOULD TAKE EXTRA CARE WHEN HANDLING TROUT THEY PLAN TO RELEASE! IT IS AN EXCELLENT TIME TO SWITCH TO SMALLMOUTH BASS IN THE HOUSATONIC RIVER.[/#ff0000] We are at the tail end of the White Fly hatch. Use a White Wolf (#10-12). Other insect hatches include Sulphurs (#14-16, evening), Blue Wing Olive (#18-22, early morning; spinner fall in evening), Isonychia (#12-14 evening), Light Cahill (#12-16, evening), and Black caddis (#16-18, early morning & evening). Try Black/Cinnamon Ants (#18-22, mid day in fast water), Black Beetles (#14-18, mid day), Stone Hopper (#8-10, mid day) and Flying Ants (#18-22, mid day, when windy/humid). Don’t forget streamers (morning & evening). Patterns to try include White Zonkers, Wooly Buggers, Muddlers, Micky Finn, and Grey or Black Ghosts (#4-10).
Lakes & Ponds Some good trout fishing is still being found, best reports from Colebrook Reservoir (2.2 lb rainbow), Crystal (Ellington), East Twin (21”), Highland and Wonoscopomuc Lakes Beach Pond and Squantz Pond. [#004080]MARINE REPORT[/#004080][Image: stb2.gif]
The surface water temperature in Long Island Sound (LIS) remains in the low 70’s °F. Check out the following web sites for more detailed water temperatures and marine boating conditions:

Also remember to check the CT Angler’s Guide page 52 for tidal information and page 50 for saltwater trophy fish award info.
[#009999]FISHING IS FAMILY FUN! SALTWATER FISHING IS HOT (PRIME TIME), WITH SOME OF THE BEST FISHING OF THE SEASON. GET OUT AND ENJOY SOME FAMILY FUN.[/#009999]
[#ff0000]SPECIAL NOTE: THE WINTER FLOUNDER FISHING SEASON CLOSED AUGUST 1ST AND WILL NOT REOPEN UNTIL APRIL 1ST 2006.[/#ff0000]
STRIPED BASS fishing remains good on the major reefs and rip areas. Night fishing is the most productive time to go and don’t forget about using live baits (scup, hickory shad or eels) for “cow” bass. To reduce hooking mortality, try circle hooks when using live or cut chunk baits.
STRIPERS and BLUEFISH can be found at the usual spots: The Watch Hill reefs, Ram Island Reef, the Race, Plum Gut, Thames River, Bartlett Reef, the humps south of Hatchett Reef, Long Sand Shoal, Cornfield Point, Southwest Reef, Sixmile Reef, the reefs off Madison and Branford, New Haven Harbor, Charles Island area, Penfield Reef, and around the Norwalk Islands.
SNAPPER BLUEFISH are in the tidal creeks and coves. Flood tide seems to be the best time to go. Snappers range size from about 4 to 6 inches in length.
SUMMER FLOUNDER (FLUKE) fishing is spotty. The Stonington area, Mystic River, Bloody Grounds to Black Point, Connecticut River, Long Sand Shoal, Six Mile Reef and New Haven Harbor (breakwaters) are spots worth trying.
TAUTOG (BLACKFISH) can be found mixed in along with SCUP (PORGIES) at any of the major reefs.
The Niantic River is the best spot for HICKORY SHAD (early morning or in the evening are the best times).
Reports of BLUE CRABS are still on the slow side but there are signs of improvement. Remember, Connecticut is at the northern most range for blue crabs and depending on how severe our winters are can affect their abundance for the following season.
