I drove by there saturday and saw one of the prettiest reservoirs in Utah! What the crap have I been doing not going there?!

Who can tell me about the bass fishing / food sources / launch ramps in that lake? I am thinking of holding a tourney on their next year.

Great Reservoir. I was fly fishing for smallies there last weekend. I caught a ton of smaller ones, the guy I was with caught one decent fish. With all the smaller fish I think a few years down the road you could see good numbers of good sized fish. That's my take.

The launch ramp is small, we didn't have any troubles launching a 18' boat.

We visited Rockport for the very 1st time Sunday and I have to disagree on the ramp.

Four boats can be retrieved/launched simultaneously if everyone plays fair and is somewhat capable of backing a trailer without doing figure-8's. There are also two very nice docks and decent restrooms. The only problems we saw was the prep area gets in the way of the ramp festivities - better to get the boat water-ready up in the parking area.

We weren't fishing this trip as the teens wanted a day of wakeboarding, but I did some fairly intensive graphing on the dam end of the reservoir and found some great structure with LOTS if fish holding (perch??? bass???).

Mrs. W2D was giving me grief all morning about leaving the rods and tackle at home, but sometimes it's just all about the kids.

We're not pop-gear fishermen but we did get a chuckle watching 2 or 3 different boats during the day where it appeared someone was furiously fighting a fish, someone else is at the stern with the net ready, and out of the water pops that big 'ol gang of spinners with no fish!

Also, what's the season, bag limit, and preferred weapon for personal watercraft? [mad][mad][mad]
Their "To hell with the rules, I'm above the law" attitude is becoming increasingly more dangerous. Someone's gonna injured or killed by the actions of those maniacs, again.

I fished the "Port" yesterday with my son. We had a blast. I borrowed a buddy's small boat (mine's not registered this year due to a hole that someone put in it at the storage yard). We got out on the lake around 9:00 a.m. and as soon as we left the dock, turned south and started trolling along the east side of the res using a dodger with a tripple teaser tipped with a half of worm. We picked up 5 real nice big fat bows' ranging from 14 to 19".
Rockport has real nice facilities and boat ramp / docks. There is a small concession up there called "Rockport Sports" (435.783.WAVE) with limited fishing supplies. You can get burgers, drinks, snowcones, and other treats. They also rent jet ski's, etc.
Flush toilets at the dock area (the rest of the area's restrooms are outhouses), and a small flsh cleaning station. It's the perfect place for an afternoon (or morning) outing. The park entry fee is $7.00 day use. I would imagine that the weekends are really busy due to the close prox to S.L.C. and Ogden area. Give it a try, you will be surprised.[]

The decent bass was 12", all others were under 10". I didn't care, my first experience with smallies on a fly rod was fun regardless of the size.

Niether of us are know-it-all bassers so I'm not sure if there are larger numbers of nice fish or not.

The smallies have been in their before Jordanelle and some over 4 lb have been caught in their in the past.

Bass rods is correct on the 4 lbers.

I believe it was two springs ago, one of the guys from the riverdale sportsmans went with the DWR on thier shocking trip.

They shocked up a lot of bass, and some very very nice ones as well.

It gets hit for bass by a few anglers, but the wind usually blows up there. I think that scares away tons of finesse fishermen.

I know the last time I was up there fishing bass, the stinking wind blew me all over the place, and made fishing tough. Ended up just calling it a day.

Hey UTBASS,

I fish that pond quite often. Last thursday, I caught a couple dozen smallies(one over 13 inches) and as many perch(a couple of lunkers) as a person can forget catching. If you want to fish it sometime, let me know - I can show you the "spots" Micropterus dolomieu and Perca flavescens hold(or if you want, I can show you some big holes where the big Salmo trutta and Oncorhynchus mykiss also hang out).

BTW - the wind up there is notorious - especially when it picks up in the afternoon(and it almost always does). It(the prevailing wind) coincidently, can make it a challange to trailer a small boat due to the orientation of the ramp. My opinion is that Rockport's ramp is just about the worst placed ramp in Utah - considering the consistant wind and ever-present waves.

In my opionion wakeboarders and water skiers are not much better than jet ski's![shocked] Both groups have thier rude inconsiderate [url "mailto:a$@#@$"]a$@#@$[/url]. Try float tubing with jetskis. waterskiers, wakeboarders and boats coming between you and shore. And your only 40 feet from shore.

Rockport needs to have some serious harvest of bass. I think the bass are stunted in that lake. Theres been tons of them in there for years. But the average size stays small.

Plus, hurting smallies is bad luck. Your boat, car, truck, and fishing rod will break.
