Eastern Sierra Report 5/1
#1
Couple of buddies and I hit the Eastern Sierra's this past weekend plus a couple of days. Headed up on Thursday night and was on Lundy Lake first thing Friday morning. We trolled with Rapalas, T. Bouyants (brown) and several mini jigs. The mini-jigs worked the best. Dark green and translucent, small lead heads, no swivel, smallest split shot 2-3 feet above. Unusually high winds kept us from catching anything over 2 lbs. Caught 11 trout, kept 4. After lunch, two of us went back on the boat, one tube'd it and the other fished from shore with PB. We all returned about 6-7PM after the winds just about killed us all! The boaters caught another 5 trout and kept 2. The tuber (on the fly) brought back nothing 'cause the water was just too rough (although he had some bites he claims) and the baitmeister limited out from the shore on yellow and orange. Sheesh! We poached six of the smallest trout that night and enjoyed a bottle of wine. Saturday morning was way too windy, so we all fished from shore for a few hours with very little success - we returned the few back into the lake to grow up. We headed up to Virginia and Trumbull and caught and released another 13+ trout between all four of us. Again the wind was not on our side. Only one brown was kept and was a nice 2+ lbs. Sunday we headed down to Convict (big mistake). Again the winds hampered our fishing and we gave it up to spend a few hours in Mammoth around town. While there, we headed over to Mary and fished on the north side of the dock for a few hours. We had a few good hits on the power bait, but casting Thomas Bouyants proved to be the best idea. We ended up bringing in 2 alpers (3-2 and 3-5) plus 6 stockers back to camp. Finally, a good day of fishing! Monday morning we packed it up and shot over to Ellery for a few last hours. The winds are starting to finally die down! (Suuuure, we're leaving now!) Ellery gave up a couple of pan-sized but we returned them. All in all, the trip turned out okay, but the winds kept us from doing very well. Very few people up there this weekend also. Will be heading up again in six weeks.

Take care!

--
troutman = half trout / half man
