Sassafras River, Upper Chesapeake Bay 8/29/05
#1
Arrival: 6:30AM
Weather: Hot, humid, 78 degrees, Heavy Fog
Water temp: 78
Water color: Stained Green to Muddy Brown
Wind: 0-2 MPH

We arrived and launched from Duffy's Marina and headed slowly to DuPont Creek as the visibility was only about 1/16 of a mile in the heavy fog. The tide was very high, and we were able to run all the way into the back into some laydowns that are normally too shallow.

We caught the first bass of 3.6 pounds on a Black Terminator BB Buzzbait, and within 5 minutes picked up the second bass just 50 yards down in a laydown in 1 foot of water. The second bass was nice, but was a little smaller at 2.8 pounds.

The Third bass came just 30 feet down into the back of the cove in another laydown and it missed the buzzbait and Kurt quickly followed up with a Yamamoto "IKA" tube with a 1/8 ounce Tungsten weight to the exact spot and he picked it up right away. It was just under 2 pounds at 1.9.

We stayed another hour and worked the rest of Duponts with a Lucky Craft crankbait, Senkos, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, and a jig with no more results.

We stopped at Freemans and had a bass miss the frog but it was a small strike and couldn't be made to hit again.

The sun had now burned all the fog off and we headed into McGill's, where we worked the dock there at the opening and the laydowns in the cove as well, with no takers.

We left this area and went to Turners where the grass had matted all the way to the surface and an algae bloom had started. The water was green and cloudy.

It was nearing 11 AM now and we moved to Lloyd's where we caught one more bass of 1.2 pounds and 5 Stripers that went from 17-20 inches on Lucky Craft crankbaits.

We left at 12:30 PM.

Until next time, Tight Lines
