Our Pro Staff Administrator Don McClure and I fished the Sassafras River today launching out of Duffy's Marina at 6:00 AM.
This was a special scouting trip to try completely new techniques in completely new locations to try to find something that nobody else has located yet.
We tried several carolina-rigged baits off points and deep grass beds, with several different baits in different colors and sizes. We then tried larger and smaller deep diving crankbaits and spinnerbaits with different blade combinations.
There was a lot more surface grass in Lloyd's and Turners than ever before, and many grassbeds had grown even thicker and farther out into the main channels. Even the pads in several creeks that are usually very high out of the water were even higher than anytime in the past.
We caught about 6 or 7 stripers on deep grass cliffs on a Terminator Spinnerbait in white/chart, in 1/2 ounce. They were all about 12-16 inches.
We caught 2 bass both a little over 2 pounds each, and lost one at the boat on a Snag Proof frog that went about 3 1/2 pounds. We had 2 more explosions on frogs and the bass never came close! They completely mised it, and even when we followed up right away with a worm, tube, and a jig, they still didn't take it. Very frustrating to say the least.
Right before we were leaving at 3:30 PM, Don picked up another legal bass of 14 inches from DuPont creek, and we headed back to the ramp.
We will try some drop-shotting and blade baits next until we find something.
