Floating for Browns this Tuesday afternoon-evening
#1
I will be floating Jordanelle this Tuesday if anyone is up for the job as well.

Water temps are cooling and things are starting to pick up for those slimy fishies.

Hey wild man,

What time on Tuesday afternoon are you planning on heading out there and where are you going to be launching ? I haven't fished Jordanelle this year and I'm thinking(a rare thing - I know) I should maybe get over there at least once before ice-up.

P.S. A friend of mine was fishing rapalas in the Rock Cliff area on Friday and got into some monster browns - those were released, so they're probably still there.

Hey Craig,

Is the boat ramp completed or do you have to haul your 'toon a ways?

FH: Plan is to launch at the Rock Cliff arm and drag rapalas around. I have caught 10 browns over 5 lbs this year at Jordanelle, all but 1 was in the rockcliff arm.

HCD: Yes the ramp is done, it is short, steep and narrow but you can launch boats there now.

I'll post, sounds fun! I'm trying to figure out what rods to bring....so, what is the range of depth you fish and what # test so I don't get snapped off? Oh yea-what time?

I am launching at about 3:30 PM.

I am planning to bring 4 different setups.

1st is a trolling rod with lead core line, to get a bit deeper with my rapalas.

2nd is a medium action rod with 10 lb test on it for straight rapala tie-ons and for my bottom bouncer/floating rapala setup.

3rd is my medium-heavy 15 lb braided line that will have a make-shift downrigging weight I can clip to it (this downrigging weight setup was passed on to me by lundman on here and works quite well all it is is a clothing tie clip with a 2-4 oz weight fashioned to it)

4th will be my medium action rod with 6lb test for last minute changes in species (perch, smaller trout, smallmouth)

All cover all species and aspects of presentation. If the slimers arent biting I can quickly switch to smallies or perch. Smile

See you there, should be a great time.

I will be on channel 12. I got an early start at work (5:30am) so I should be heading up around lunch, a bit earlier.

Hey CBR,

I am still not sure if I can make the "nelle" this afternoon. But I will try to get out.

One quick question on one of your rig set ups. Your make shift down rigger - if that is what you were refering to - I may have misunderstood what you were saying.

It sounds like kinda-sorta what I have tried. I've used a line counter reel with 25 lb mono and a 2 oz banana trolling weight with a down rigger release that attaches to another rod and line that has my lure on it(the line counter reel and rod replace an actual down rigger). When I get a strike, it releases just like on a down rigger and I then play the fish on the second line. I've always called it my "poorman's down rigger. Is that what you are kind of doing ? Or, am I completely missing what you are talking about ? Wouldn't surprise me if I were. I also like the idea of using braided line.

Also, what is the "clothing tie clip" thing you are using ? They sound lots less expensive than the real down rigger releases I had been using and if I could make those work, I might save me some money because I've lost a few of my rigs before because I was unattentive and some how snagged my whole rig out of existance. Of course that was when I didn't have a sonar to know about the depth or structure that I must have snagged up on.

Not really, I use braided line and use a clothing line clip with rubber pieces added to the tip parts that opens and clips to lines. I also loop a heavy duty rubberband around the tip so it has more resistance. I then take a weight and a key ring and loop the weight onto the keyring, then loop the keyring onto the clothing line1 clip. Then I let out about 50 feet of line (braided line) and i clip the clip to the line and then let out another 50 or so, the clip stays on the line until I reel in enough to take it off, meanwhile I am fighting the fish while reeling in. It stays on surprisingly well.

After going over the design though I just had another idea. I think before I head up to Jordanelle I will stop by home depot and put this new idea into reality so I can try it today. Smile If it works I will post pics of the new idea.
