Browns on the Duchesne River
#1
Had a neighbor tell me recently that he and a friend went to some secret honey hole on the Duchesne River and caught some humongous browns. This neighbor and I are pretty good friends, but I don't know his friend who showed him the hole, and this other friend swore him to secrecy regarding its location. (I don't blame him, really.)

So my question to all of you is, have any of you had decent success in finding large browns on the Duchesne R.? My neighbor wouldn't even tell me near which town he and his buddy were fishing. (He either thinks I'm a very good fisherman and will catch all of the fish, or he actually doesn't like me as much as I thought he did! [Wink])

I'm not looking for any or your honey holes either, but how about some friendly BFT advice on where I might go to at least begin to search out some good spots for myself?

The reason I ask is that I'm not too familiar with the Duchesne. I believe its headwaters are up high in the Uintas (right?), but I would think that many of the larger browns are down in lower elevations.

If you don't feel like responding to me in this thread for the whole world to see, please PM me.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Back in the day when a reservation permit was affordable I used to fish some great holes on the duchene and uintah rivers and some of their lower tributaries like pot creek. Now it costs $20 a day to fish the reservation and who knows how much for a season. I don't know every inch of the duchene, but am fairly familiar with it and the only place I can think of anywhere near there that has browns concistently over 20" is upper stillwater. I believe it and rock creek are tributaries of the duchene.

Princefisher,

I havent fished it in a couple of years, but I have caught browns to 26 inches. Out of the section of the Duchesne that passes thru Hanna and Tabiona. In another month or so those big browns will be spawning up the north and west fork. Late October and November is the best time of the year to catch a monster brown. Best of luck.
