Tampa Bay Area Fishing Report

Tampa Bay Area

Fishing Report Captain Charles Walker

12/15/02

One beautiful day followed by five inches of rain and several days of 25 to 30 mph winds made for another typical (for this year) week on the Suncoast. The temperatures are now down in the 40s at night and not even up to 70 during the day so as far as fishing is concerned, we are now in wintertime mode for sure. If you get a good day to go offshore frozen sardines will work as well as anything else with the water temperatures we have now. Of course you should still take some live pinfish and anything else you can find for live bait, but the majority of the fish will probably come on frozen baits. Since most people relegate December to shopping, partying, football watching and other indoor sports anyway, the fact that fishing is slow doesn’t really concern too many people this month. You inshore fishermen are not allowed trout or snook now so only one red per day is the bag limit unless you can find some other species of fish out there in the ice water. There may be some pompano, flounder, and the occasional cobia, but most likely you will be waiting till afternoon for the water to warm enough for anything to want to bite.
