Lincoln Beach Report 10-7-05
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Launched near the L at 7 AM. Air temp 35 and water temp 51. Fished from shallow to deep (9 feet) and back to shallow. Had a fat 25" (estimated) walleye on right up to the tube, where it arranged its own release. That was about 8 AM. Did not have another touch for a couple of hours. Did not see many fish on sonar, as in past weeks. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Couldn't have asked for nicer weather. Clear and calm. Walleyes probably would have been more active with a "fishing riffle". [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Kept working back and forth, from shallow to deep, throwing single and double rigs, 3" to 5", every possible color. Zippo.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Worked all the way down to the first spring. Made lots of casts in and around it, while watching the sonar and the temp guage. No noticeable change in temp, even right at the inlet of the spring. Only metered one small school of fish. Probably bluegills or baby white bass.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Started back to the west and stopped to try my catfish spot of two weeks ago. It gave up 4 kitties two weeks ago, but the water was several degrees warmer too. Dragged a minnow on the bottom with one rod and soaked a half minnow on a bobber head jig under a float on the other. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Just about the time I was ready to admit that I had finally achieved skunkdom, my bobber disappeared. Then, several yards of line disappeared from my light reel with 6# line on it. It took about 10 minutes to whup and turned out to be 26" and 7.8#. Great skunk relief. The deadly little bobber head jigs had struck again.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The water had just passed 53 degrees, and was finally about 58 when I got out around 2. I had several hits, probably from white bass, and did land one of the little buggers. It will make some good scampi appetizer to go with the Kitty Krispies main course.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Air temp was almost 70 when I got off the water, but the north breeze was just starting to come up. Who knows what it will be the rest of the weekend.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Saw three boats, and a couple of wading anglers going out just before I came in. I stopped out on the end of the jetty and there were two vehicles and anglers fishing. Not a bite all day.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The fish cleaning station is closed now. Just when I was getting used to my new cordless electric fillet knife.[/#0000ff]

[cool]Nice report, TD. I'm glad you at least got a nice fat "K" to reward you for your persistence today. That's too bad that another big 'eye excaped from your grasp. Looks like it was indeed a nice day out there, and I'm jealous. Also looks like your bobber head jigs are hot. How far above the jig did you stop the bobber? Or, did you just let it run free above the jig?

Weather permitting, I'm going to float LB next Saturday all day till the latest embarrassment at Edwards Stadium kicks off (which starts at 8:00p.m.)

[cool][#0000ff]When I fish those bobber heads, I try to find an area with a fairly constant depth and then set the bobber to ride the baited jig within a foot of the bottom. Cats will often come up higher to get an enticing bait, but I believe in making it easier for them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The spot I have scored the last couple of trips is between 5.5 and 7 feet. I set the bobber at about 5 feet. Most of the fish I have caught on the rig in there have come from about 6 to 6.5 feet.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]So far, every kitty that has taken a baited bobber head has made it to the net. The biggie today was hooked right in the upper lip, with that sharp little Matzuo red hook.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Let's watch the weather for next Saturday and maybe we can gang up on those fishies together...before you have to go suffer through another episode of "As the stomach turns"...BYU style. Sorry. My old school, too, but it just ain't been the same since Lavelle ain't there.[/#0000ff]

[#ff4040]Great report TD. At least you got a nice kitty and whitie for dinner tonight. I think the two anglers you saw wading was Gee and one of our other friends. He said he was going out there. Don't know how he did though. I think the water temp needs to go down a little more for the eyes to be active.[/#ff4040]

[cool][#0000ff]Hey Gee, too bad about the waders. This time of year the water is just a bit too cool to be inside with you. But, as you point out, it should be a few degrees cooler for the best walleye action. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Do you use Aquaseal to repair your waders? Let me know if you need any assistance.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Yeah, you at least like to touch them before sending them back to make some babies next spring. But, I'm like you and Chuck. I would rather take home a couple of small ones and leave the mamas to keep things perkin'. At least that's what I say when I lose one (while whining under my breath).[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]That was a typical "self release". Chomped the jig, shook the head a few times, bored down and bent my stick real good, then came to the top, opened her yap, shook her head and said "Here...this is your jig. You can have it back." And I had to duck to keep from getting a new "piercing". I ain't into that stuff.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]I have been repairing all kinds of waders for years. Send me a PM and I will give you my address (Salt Lake Area). Maybe you and Scott can come over and I can show you some of my stuff and show you how to repair those waders. I have some Aquaseal and I'm pretty good at finding sneaky leaks. But, it sounds like you have one big enough to find easy.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]We will all be watching the weather. You are welcome to join us if we put it together.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Round up your tube and make sure it holds air. Out4Trout has the exclusive on tubes going flat when we go fishing.[/#0000ff]

[#ff4040]I would be up for visiting TD's den. Then we could share our knowledge. I wouldn't mind seeing the setups he has on his gear too. Hey Gee just let me know whenever, but make sure it is on my day off.[/#ff4040]

[cool]Hey, watch it! I resemble that tubes going flat remark! LOL! I think I have a pretty good handle (finally) on making sure my valves are screwed down tight enough now. The last three or four trips or so I haven't had a leak again, (knock on tube)!

Next Saturday sounds great as long as the w is in check. I don't know the forcrash for Saturday yet, but they said tonight that Friday will be 72 and sunny (warmest day of the week so far.) Hopefully mama nature cooperates.

And, as for "as the stomache turns," that was a good one! Sad, but true. You are right, it ain't been the same since Lavell left. Crowton's first year ('01) was good, but then it has been all downhill since. Unfortunitely I bought season tickets again for this year, so I'm stuck with them. Unless things really turn around, I don't think I'll renew for next year ($340 is a lot of money to be there while your team loses another one), but I will still root them on and follow them (with a tiny radio while I'm at the lake chasing fishies).
