Bear lake 10-14-05
#1
[#ff0000] Well, as already posted, I went to the mighty bear lake with BLM and Old Coot yesterday for the day. The weather was Great, the company was Great. As for the fishing, Couldn't seem to get the Big fish to take an interest in what we were offering.Oh well another day perhaps. [/#ff0000]
[#ff0000] We all had a Great time and a lot of fun. I also learned a few things as well. Oh, and we also met up with The Wiper team, and Bait_Caster and friend and also talked to BLFG at the Marina. I can't wait for the next trip up there.[/#ff0000]

I went out Saturday afternoon to and braved the combat fishing crew at the State Park. Plenty of macks cruising around but only the ethically challenged (i.e snaggers) were able to pull anything out. Every time they'd hook one they'd make a big fuss if it was hooked in or near the mouth so they could keep it. Saw a few dead fish in the water that may have been wounded and killed by their "fishing" methods.

[red] Hi fishnate, I was guilty of foul hooking a couple of fish myself. Don't know why they were doing that. I do wish we had gotten into some BIG fish though.[/red]

[black]I believe the sucker you accidentally snagged and the cutthroat you snagged when trying to set the hook after it hit your jig are a far cry from the activities going on at the Bear Lake State Park Marina Dikes right now.[/black]
[black][/black]
[black]There are people who are intentionally trying to snag the lake trout that are coming into the rocky areas to spawn. They use very large spoons with treble hooks and other gear trying to intetionally foul hook these fish. I wish the F&G would totally close off the dikes during the spawning period so people can not exploit this resource when they are so vulnerable.[/black]
[black][/black]
They close areas on other waters to prevent abuses by dishonest, snag happy anglers, like the inlet of Willard Bay and the Provo River during the walleye spawn. Why do we allow these abuses to take place year after year at Bear Lake? The lake trout of BL are a big draw for anglers who help maintain the local economy even when all the summer tourists have long gone.

I don't know all the answers but I sure know what I don't like and can't stomach. The illegal practice of snagging lake trout while they are most vulnerable should be stopped. This only harms the resource and makes all anglers look bad because of some ignorant few. Just my Angry, not so humble opinion.

[#ff4040]You figure they would do the same thing for other fish, instead just walleye. It just doesn't make any sense to leave the dikes open, if they know that people are snagging fish. [/#ff4040]

Foul hookin' happens but it happens far more when the masses set forth to gut rip the future of the fishery. As its been stated, there's no honor amongst thieves..
