Carp???

[cool][#0000ff]Carp are lots of fun on flyrods. They will take flies just like trout. However, they are often more difficult to catch on flies than trout. It also works better where you can see the fish and the fish can see the fly, in clear water. Not much of that around here.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]There are quite a few carp clubs around the country and some that specialize in fly fishing for them. There are even guides that offer fly fishing trips for carp. [#0000ff]Here's a pic of a big ol' mirror carp I caught on a small chartreuse fly I was fishing for crappies up at Willard Bay. I was using about 4# leader on a 5 weight rod, so it was a long battle.[/#0000ff]

Carp are awesome on a fly rod. The spookiness, the selectivity, the brute force make for a top notch fish to catch. I got a book awhile back, Carp on the fly, excellent throne material and also tells about all the different situations you can find them.

Yes, It's my hobbie. Here's a photo of one(9 lbs 10 oz.) from about 2 weeks ago at my secret spot on UL. My set up in this photo is a Sage SLT- 4 weight/Ross Evolution #2 reel, with an Orvis weight forward floating line and an 8 foot hand tied leader(all blood knots except the tippet connection which is a surgeon's knot) ending with 20 inches of 5X tippet. The fly in the carps mouth is one of my hand tied nymph immitations(it really looks like nothing that naturally occurs in nature) made from the shedded fur from one of my hounds(I call it my Hound's Hair nymph) - so far, that fly(in sizes 14,16,or 18) has been able to catch almost every species of fish in Utah - with the exception of a few predatory types.
