A little help in repairing the drags on Daiwa reels

[size 1]I own several Daiwa line counter reels. I like the reels, except that I have always had problems with the two Accudepth 17LC models (I purchased them new almost a year ago). The one reel has an accurate line counter and the other one is off about 100% (for example if I am vertically jigging in 30 feet of water the one reel registers 30 feet of line out, and the other registers 58 feet of line out -- both reels have 8 pound Cajun Red monofilament line on them). This is an annoyance, but the other problem I have with both reels is much more frustrating. On both reels I can set the star drags at just the right amount of tension that I want, only to have the drags release on their own, especially when I set the hook. We aren't talking about the drags just loosening a little, we are talking about having to turn the drag many revolutions before I have any drag at all! I have not taken the reels apart; however, short of doing that I can not see anything that one could adjust to alleviate this problem. I called Daiwa and of course the guy I spoke to had no ideas, except for me to purchase some new drag washers, which I did. I tried to get a parts diagram online, but couldn't find one. Anyone out there have any experience replacing drag washers on Daiwa conventional reels?[/size]

Hey Kent, I don't have any experience with that reel, but I've taken apart and repaired lots of reels. I can look at it if you want.

Kent, up until a couple months ago I was working in the indsutry, and when I had spare time I used to spend it tinkering with and learning about all the different brands of equipment.

I tell you this much, I tore apart a lot of reels while I was there. The one thing I learned, all reels are not even close to being created equal.

One other thing, the parts and functions are all basic, but there are different proceedures that must be follwed in assembling reels.

I tore one apart one day to see how much plastic was used on the inner workings of the reel, and to see what the gears were made of.
When I put it back together, the drag had the exact same problem you are having.

It took me several hours of tinkering to figure out that while it came apart in any position, in order to get the drag to work again the settings of the various pieces had to be in certian locations otherwise you could tighten the drag all the way and still not have much drag, or have a very touchy drag.

And they are not all the same. Some go back together very easy, and work perfect, others are more involved.

I can tell you this, the more complex the "features" are, the more small moving parts, and the more high tech gizmo crap they put on there, the more time you will spend trying to get it right.

I never did oull that particular reel apart, I did a couple other diawas though. Lots of small parts, lots of plastic parts. Not a lot of fun.

Hi Kent - My bubby had the same exact problem this last summer with his abbu garica reel and I believe after two tear downs and builds we discovered the problem. He stored his reels & poles on the ceiling of his garge. The Heat of the summer caused the reel grease to melt and get onto the drag washers and caused him to have NO drag even when the drag was tightened down.

His short term fix (since we were fishing) was to buy a new one. The long term was to get new washers and not store his reels in the hot roof of his garage.

I own other Daiwa line counter reels and really like them -- for some reason I have had problems with this one model.

I have the Sealine LC's, and they have been really good. The drag and clicker on the 27's is better than the 17's. I looked on Diawa's website to see if they had a diagram of those reels but didn't see one.

Sounds like it should be a pretty simple thing, though. Maybe some grease where it shouldn't be for the drag thing. I'd take the one with the faulty line counter back and exchange it.
