I guess I should of made it up . If I knew you would be there , I would of beelined there today . Nice fish Ron . MGB was getting adjusted to 4" ice last year , so he is getting use to that thinner stuff now . It really does help to have some yager on hand .I just wish it had a skiff of snow on it so I wont fall down .

Randy, at the beginning of last year it was 6" minimum of ice. That day at Rock Port last year when there was 4" of ice with open water surrounding it,it took me a little while to get the courage to walk on it. Turns out 4" is enough, as long as you don't wonder out to the middle, but that is the minimum, no way I would walk on 2.5".

[cool]Sweet report, Ron! I hope the ice is up to about 4 inches this Saturday, but if not that's o.k., I'll just send Mike (BassAckward) out first! LOL! Seriously though, I can't wait to nail some slimers under the ice. I hear those tigers fight well, and I can't wait to tangle with one!

[black]WHAT THE HECK !?!????? With as cold as it is getting at night it should thicken up every night. My dad and brother were going to give it a try tomorrow hoping for 3 1/2 - 4 inches but sounds like that is wishful thinking. They are not brave/stupid/hung with brass enough to try 2 1/2 inches. They may end up open water fishing at Scofield. Hope it thickens up with weeks end.[/black]

I don't know where you get your temps reading for there , but I don't see any cold fronts coming in to help make ice and would not expect the ice to get much thicker until the weather brings in some more cold artic air . JMHO

hey bigcat the ice was a little thicker yesterday than the day before.. but as you can tell from the pic of me holding up that fish it was not that cold up there.. with 3 days of little wind and lot's of sun the ice is not growing as fast as one would think...
but hey it's safe ice i seen 10 to 12 pepole out on it yesterday and other than some puckered butt's and sore butt's from falling down did not see any problem with the ice..

[cool][#0000ff]That new slick ice can really take a toll on tailbones...and headbones. Everyone should include ice cleats in their early season gear. It can prevent concussions and can also make it easier to use a hand auger without spinning yourself around on that slick ice.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Hey Ron, you need to set up a shot with you standing on clean unmolested ice, with just that new ice in the background. For the rest of your life, whenever somebody gives you grief, you can show them the pic and tell them that you have proof that you "walk on water". Sure looks like it anyway.[/#0000ff]

Ron it was fun. And as usually is the case while walking of water, it was fun doing that too, glad we ran up..
Lots of fun in the sun without a snow snake in sight.
Mini Mag's or parts there of hooked to anything dropped. I fished with a What-a-Cricket all day because I left the custom stuff home (brain freeze!).... Great bite, lots of hook ups as well as many "a swing and a miss" on 3M and Ron's part. Of course being the Ice Fishin' Master I am it never happens to me.[ ] lol..

HA69,
I haven't seen a forcast for that area in particular but I figured that if the nightime temps in the valley were getting down to 24-26 degree's that one could reasonably expect 10 to 15 degree's less than that at the elevation of Huntington. That would make it 10-15 degree's for the almost 14 hours of darkness compared to only 10 hours of daylight. I would think that should be enough to add at least a 1/2 inch per night. I know it isn't a major cold snap but hey we've got ice to fish!

That's what you'd expect, but it ain't what's been happenning up there.

Looks like it's been about the same up there as it has been down in the valleys. Don't cha just love these inversions?

My dad and brother fished huntington this morning. They said it was still about 3 inches thick and a little more than a lot freeky! They both wore lifejackets just in case... cause they are not hung with brass like some who have ventured out in the last few days. They iced 10 fish in the first hour. Then the sun came up and the ice really started popping and cracking and the pucker factor was too high and they called it a day. A long way to drive for one hour of fishing but fun catching while it lasted. Hopefully it will add a little thickness the next week or so.

lol yeah the ice realy starts talking in the morning when the sun starts to warm things up..
the other mornning it was cracking and poping so load it sounded like gun shots.. and we could feel the ice quake and shake as well.. lol..
but would only do that tell about 10:00 then it would quiet down..
BTW i had my pfd with me the first time i went out as well.. but did not put it on.. had my boy hold it incase he need to throw it to me.. lol..
taking a cold bath is not the worse thing that can happen to one ice fishing.. it's the freezing after you get out of the water that realy sucks..
