Chicken Creek Ice is on!!
#1
First ice trip to the berry this year, ran up after work and checked the ice at Chicken Creek before going all the way to Mud Creek. Walked out about 10 feet and tested the ice and it was about 2.5-3", not enough for my liking, so on to Mud Creek. Tried it first in about 30 feet. Caught two cutts in about 30 minutes, then nothing for about 20 minutes. Decided to move into shallower water. Good decision. Absolutely hammered them until dark, I'm guessing 50+ between my wife and I. Tried paddle bugs, white sparkle tube jigs, whattacrickets, and swedish pimples all tipped with chub minnows. White tube jigs did the best by far. Also tried a whole chub by itself and they liked that too. The chubs have to be fresh though, I'd recommend the aquarium kind. . .

Anyway, I caught my first over the slot cutt! Last year I must have caught 200 fish out of there ice fishing and never a single one over 21". Was lucky enough to haul in two last night, a 21.5" and a 23". I was surprised at how skinny they were. Probably two of the leanest fish I've caught of that length. I was comparing them in my mind to one of the 21" Kokanee or a 21" Wipers I caught last summer and it left them looking kind of wimpy. Still a ton of fun, though, think I'll go back tomorrow night.

I may be wrong, but don't the cutts have to be longer than 22" to be over the slot?

[cool]Right you are, fishwisperer. Looks like he kept an illegal fish. Good thing the wardens weren't around to catch him, or is it?[pirate]

[cool]Must have been Chicken Creek WEST, 'cause nobody can fish my spot (CCE). I'm one of those fish snobs, you know.[Wink]

Seriously though, It's probably about that thickness at both locations. I heard somebody was fishing it on Sunday at CCE (Jakes Bay). Man, I've gotta get up there soon!

O4T he never said he kept it, lets hope he didn't.

Anyway, nice job FishHungry thats some good catching. I guess the early and late bite seems to be best.

Heard a rumor that the contract for plowing the strwberry marina parking lot, mudcreek,Chicken Creeks and ladders has not been finalized. If they don't get it signed there will be no place to park this winter come 12-26-05.

B4B, post what you where told.

If I remember right, 23" is bigger than 22". Will someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

C'mon guys . . . I was trying to be FUNNY!!! I slipped in that 21" and "aquarium chubs," to see if I could get a rise out of a few of the "tightly strung" on the board. I didn't think it would be THAT easy!

Anyhoo, I did catch 2 over the slot, one 22.5" and one 23" and neither of them were out of the water more than a minute or two, just long enough to stretch them out, stress them out, poke my tape measure in their eye, pinch their tails, calculate an "official" measurement, double and triple check the proclamation for regulations, look around for a warden to help me be sure, then decide that they were PROBABLY legal, at least to the best of my knowledge and intent (which is worthless, of course) . . . . and then remember that trout taste bad and throw them back down the hole. And yes, I did use chubs, but they were dead, man were they dead. I think they were dead before I even caught them last summer. Then I froze the willies out of them just to be sure. . . but I did put them in one of those little Styrofoam coolers to transport them to Strawberry. Could that be consider an "aquarium"? Dang it! I have to go turn myself in now.
I checked the ice at Chicken Creek East but didn't fish it, I went on to Mud Creek. By this weekend, CCE should be 5+" and plenty safe. Didn't see or hear any geese, although they may have been there, I was too preoccupied with fishing.
