We've gone to the big white clips for everything with the exception of the macks. We use the big black ones for them big guys. With the white clips we get a good hook set but on smaller fish they sometimes don't pop the line but you still can tell they are on. We don't use adjustable clips but I have some. We use downriggers all the time we troll. Even inf we are fishing on top. You get a better hook set and know when you have had a hit. Hey, you said you were going out to the shop to work on chain saws. Do you work on small engines for a business? If so where are you located? I need some work done. Just thought I'd ask. We are still downriggin' on Deer creek. nice bows and some browns as well. We may troll right into spring. So there's never a bad time to ask about downriggin'.

[red] Hi olmoose, I think the releases are a matter of experience and preference. I use the Off-Shore tackle OR-1 medium Tention release. That one works for me.When you buy your releases, be sure to have several on hand You know the old saying Sh-t happens. I have a Cannon Sport Trol and a new Scotty 1050 both manual models and they work great. This is just my 2 cents worth.[/red]

I prefer the off-shore releases my self .The white ones that are light to medium tension for everything execpt for when fishing deep .When fishing deep for big mack's i like to use the black off shore releases, both of these types of releases are easy to use.The gripper pads hold well, and prices are very compareable to other brands.

I liked the shasta realease, I only used it one day before I lost it ball and all last year I got more and can't wait to use them, not one pre release or non release while I used it.

Im not sure where"olmoose" originated but welcome to the forum glad to have you aboard, as Ramp tramp indicated The Shasta Tackle release that my company manufacture's is hard to beat with an ability of multiple tension setting it performs well down to the smallest fish being able to release it, But if I had to pick something else I would have to agree for the most part with these other guy's with one variation I tend to use the smaller planer board type releases in yellow while fishing for the kokes and the black and even orange when going deep for the big boy's, that OFF-SHORE produces. I hope this help's as a realease is a vitale part of your set-up while chasing the fish. Nothing is worse then a false release after just having got it down to 50,60,or even 70+ feet in the summer, especially on manuel downrigger's, thank the lord that I have graduated to electric's!!(I will admit I cranked for year's on my old reliable Penn's) Hope this help's...You have given me the premature itch to hit the gorge trolling and for that I THANK YOU!!

In answer to where olmoose originated....years ago while fishing the Newfork in WYO, in one of my finer moments decided to play rodeo clown with one of the local moose, needless to say my 240# will not walk on water no matter what the speed.my partners have put that handle on me since. Thanks for the response on the downrigger release
