Rockport ice/snow?

Howdy, Has anyone fished Rockport this weekend? How's the ice and was the bite slow? Been fishing at Rockport the last couple of years and this is my first time on BigFishTackle. Always enjoy the stories and advice. Thanks.

Hey Ono, welcome to the board! I fished Rockport this weekend. My son was under the weather, so I went alone.

There is about 5 inches of ice on the south end. Large area of open water and thin looking ice on the norhtern half. Fished the west side on Saturday. The bite was slow. Not many people catching much. Managed only 8 perch, but I did catch 4 nice rainbows. All but 1 of the bows were suspended about 10' -15' down. Used just alot of different jigs, and the best seemed to be micro foxy jigs tipped with mealworms or nightcrawlers. Tried perch eyes, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Yesterday was not as good as Saturday. I did do alot more moving around, so not as much time fishing. I started out from the rocks on the west side and fished for 1-2 hrs with only one or two decent hits that I missed.[] Then I swung down around the south end looking for fish. Didnt find much, so I went back to my original hole. Started seeing fish and caught one perch. Another guy came over and said he wasn't having much luck. After his dog proceded to pee all over my bucket he left in a hurry. (I don't mind dogs on the ice, but that one isn't welcome anymore![mad]) I moved to a new hole and caught two more nice rainbows before I got blown off the ice. Not what it used to be, but still a good weekend.

Let's give Rockport a try. Just talked with my other fishing buddy, Greg, and he was down to Rockport the other day. He said there was 6-7" of ice at the second bathroom area. There was more open water towards the Dam. He saw lots of folks fishing there for a week day but seen only a couple of fished iced during the time he fished there. He didn't get any hits and he didn't have his fish finder. Did the Sulfur Cr. Res. this past weekend and caught trout but none with much size,13-16", The ice is at least 10" and folks are using 4 wheelers and snow machines. May do Sulfur Cr. on Sat. and Sunday. Go Steelers.
