STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod Fishing- 6/11/01

In June our best fishing has been, in the deeper water, to the east of the Bank at depths of 180-300 ft. The high-tech, small-diameter, low-stretch lines make this deeper water fishing easier than ever before. Haddock and bigger cod have made up the catch. A rather striking paradox, are the reports of cod being taken from the rather shallow—10-20 ft—ledges off Cohasset by tube and worm trollers targeting striped bass while we are working the deeper water to the east to catch our quota. One Cohasset angler has accounted for 12 incidental legal cod since mid-May. We have not had reports such as these for 20 years.

Emil Pavelec’s group from E. Rutherford, NJ fished the deep-water on the JANET B on Saturday. The group was able to jig 10 haddock between 6 and 10 pounds—mostly taking the rubber teaser above the jig, Further, good numbers of market-cod with a few large mixed came over the rails. Most cod were between 12 and 20 pounds. These “tables” to the east of the bank rise up to 300 ft surrounded by water to depths of 400 ft plus. While jigging in the 300-foot depth with not a ripple on the water, Emil’s group was treated to a sight, which got even Capt. Al more than a little excited. Squadrons of big bass between 30 and 50 pounds were coursing by the JANET B on their northward migration. Hopefully, those cows will move into the coastal waters were they can legally be fished for.

On Monday, Bob Lemoine of Dayville, CT and owner of “Bob’s Place” tackle shop in Ballouville,CT organized a group seeking cod on Stellwagen. On this day, the deep-water was again fruitful. Bob’s group was treated one of the best trips for numbers of big cod since March. Most of the smaller cod were Market or medium cod between 10 and 12 pounds. 10 large cod were over 20 pounds and three were between 25 and 30 pounds.

Capt.
