One thing that needs addressing is common courtesy to other anglers .
First and foremost is litter , you brought it with you , take it out with you , dumpsters are located in the parking lots so there is no excuse for polluting this exceptional waterway .
Second , leave the booze at the camp ! It is illegal to consume alcohol while fishing here in Michigan but that is only one reason .There are children fishing or being brought down by family members to see the big fish . The image you present to these developing minds will impact there views in years to come . If we are to enact laws that will protect our sports from groups like P.E.T.A. we want everyone on our side .
Third , fishing in close quarters requires that we all practice courteous fishing techniques .
Stand close to shore , this will make more room for others and will prevent chaos during the succession casting sequence .
Cast starting with the person furthest down river , each angler casting in succession proceeding to the furthest up river . Do not over cast , this will cause tangled lines . Cast to the 2 O'clock position and immediately retrieve in the 10 O'clock position .
Forth , retrieving .
You notice I said immediately retrieve in the last section ? You are not the only person who has spent time and money into this fishing trip . We all came to fish , and holding up anothers chance to fish is unacceptable behavior . Nobody else thinks you are the worlds greatest angler or better than them so don't start posing for your statue now .
When retrieving , tip your rod down , I see several anglers holding there rod tips up as they retrieved making others wait for them .
If you become hung up on the bottom a few simple tugs should free up your gear or proceed to break the line and re-tie your set-up . If you do need to re-tie and don't want to forfeit your spot , simply turn around (facing shore ) and re-tie . This will let the others in the line up know that they may cast without causing a tangled mess .
Fifth , There are four different styles that are popular for fishing this area . Bobber , flyrod , bottombouncing and spinners .
They don't mix well , stay in an area that is commonly used for that presentation being used .
Sixth , Fishing gear .
Keep the spider-wire and fireline at home , it is unnecessary , mono and hy-bred lines work well on these fish and will disolve in a relitivly short time when left tangled on the bottom . The superlines remain for a long time and wreak havoc when snagged by others while fishing .
Use the proper weights , too much weight is ineffective against these fish , they are waiting for baits to travel past them in a natural drift . Tight lining won't get you anywhere but into a possible altercation with other anglers .
Last but not the least , verbal skills .
A simple thank you and I'm sorry when you cross another anglers line and he untangles the mess goes a long way in keeping your trip an enjoyable experience . Who know , you might just make a friend .
