I do not own a marine radio but SkippyThe lurker swears by them,ooops Skippy quit swearing and drinking too,he has me talked into buying one. I think I will purchase one this weekend.

I don't know what you mean by "hand held", but I'll assume you are talking about non-Marine radios.

The Marine radio is very useful for waters like Lake Powell. Almost all other boats, especially houseboats have Marine radios. Also, the Marinas have open channel on their Marine radios so you can call for services/info/help.

I would say that each type has its place, but the Marine radio is more useful for Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge, etc..

I have a Icom handheld,That works great for most lakes around here,If for the gorge or lake powell mounted would be nicer and have greater range,5w on the basic handheld or 25watts of power on a mounted type.BLM was having a hard time hearing me on willard when we where on oppsite sides of the lake,but I was on a low power setting,this year I will use the high power and see if there is any difference.

just turn it on in your driveway, state parks at antelope utahlake or willard should be able to hear ya unless you live in park city.
