what kind of man would it take?

I was looking through some old record fish and saw this one. It's the world record, IGFA all-tackle Tiger shark. It weighed over 1780 lb's. The unique part of this record you ask? It wasn't caught from a boat, it was caught a Peir. He battled that shark for hours, by himself, with the wench he called a reel. Do you think you could have done it? I don't think I could have. Makes you wonder what kind of equipment he was using. Look at the size of that reel. It's like a 16/0. This fish was landed June 14th, 1964 by Walter Maxwell. And it was caught in none other than Cherrygrove, South Carolina.

Just think what it takes to do that now adays. You only need a Penn 4/0 with 600yds of 80lb spectra. It looks like that Pier Rat has at lead 200lb mono. I may be wrong and it could be only 150lb. Either way, that was a nice pull, considering that he pulled it from the Woody.[cool]

It must have taken him all day to land that sucker. I couldn't imagine how his shoulders and arms felt after that. They didn't have the croch belts and back supports back then we have now, just make shift stuff. He pretty much whooped that thing tooth and nail. You've got to take your hat off to an angler with enough skill and patients to land something like that under those conditions. [cool]

I rarely use a Belly Button myself. I definetely wouldn't strap myself to a rig either with a monster of such proportions.

2 years ago, I hooked up on an 8' 200lb Lemon Shark off of a pier. I was useing a 5' Okuma Pursuit rod, Daiwa Sealine Slh 30 reel with Trilene Big Game Electric Blue 25lb. It only took 1hr to get the toothy log to color and then another 1/2 hour to try and drag it up the length of the Pier to try to land it for a photo.

About 1/2 way up this 1100 foot long pier, the Shark took one last dive into the pilings and broke off.

That was a fun fight and lots of fun.[cool]
