Oregon Fishing Update
#1
Fisheries Update

January 24th – January 30th, 2003

The Columbia River around Kelly Point Park is choked with smelt. Heavy competition explains mediocre results for anglers in this area. The sturgeon fishing will likely only get more difficult as more smelt enter the river in the coming weeks.

No spring chinook rumored from the Columbia River however, Sellwood Bridge on the Willamette River has been putting out a few spring chinook for those willing to put in this time trolling herring. Steelhead counts over Willamette Falls are improving giving anglers hope that a wild run will materialize on the Santiam systems.

The Clackamas and Sandy River's continue to disappoint steelheaders and no relief appears to be on the way. The north coast is also less than impressive as we transition from hatchery steelhead season to wild steelhead season. More wild fish are beginning to show in the catches but the let up in pressure shows the disappointment anglers have been experiencing.

Sturgeon fishing and crabbing on Tillamook Bay are fair at best. The Siletz River appears to be improving for broodstock and wild fish while the Umpqua and Coquille have disappointed anglers this season.

The Umpqua is providing some decent sturgeon fishing in the lower stretches, however. This week Alder, Cleawox, Munsel and Dune Lakes will be stocked with trout.
