National Trails Day event June 3 at Congaree Creek
The Heritage Trust Program of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources Habitat Protection Section will sponsor a National Trails Day event Saturday, June 3 at [url "http://www.dnr.sc.gov/managed/heritage/congcreek/description.html"]Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve[/url] in Lexington County where volunteers will help with trail projects and trash pickup. Those wishing to attend can sign up with Kay Daniels at the Columbia Heritage Trust office at (803) 734-3893 and should do so no later than 5 p.m. Thursday, June 1. Those signing up should specify which project they wish to work on and leave their contact information. The project will only be canceled in the event of severe weather. For more information on the June 3 event, call Brian Long, Heritage Trust Program cultural preserve manager, at (803) 609-7057 in Columbia.
This year for the June 3 National Trails Day event, volunteers will be working on the completion of the Manning Trail off the 12th Street Extension in Cayce and working on the parking area and kiosk where the proposed future canoe/kayak takeout will be. Volunteers will also be cleaning up the proposed future canoe access area on US 321, and crews will be paddling the section from US 321 to 12th Street picking up trash in the creek and clearing debris. Some trail maintenance will also be done on the Guignard Trail on Old State Road.
Volunteers will meet at the new parking area on Old State Road at 9 a.m. From I-77 and from Knox Abbott Drive, new brown directional signs can be followed on 12th Street (Highway 35) to the new parking area on Old State Road.
The sponsor for this year’s event is an executive member of the Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve Stewardship Committee and owner of Sub Station II on Knox Abbott Drive in Cayce, Chris Kueny. Kueny is donating lunch from his sandwich shop to everyone that signs up ahead of time for the event. Anyone that comes without signing up will be welcome but will not be guaranteed lunch. Many tools will be provided if needed but if possible please bring hand tools, gloves, etc., and be sure to wear appropriate clothing and shoes.
