Strawberry May 27,28 & 29
#1
Been up to the berry all weekend, that was some tough weather to deal with but we didn't let it stop us.

Day 1: Launched the boat at 6:00am in breezy conditions air temperature was 48. The surface temperature stayed at 50*-52* all weekend. We started over by the ladders for the first couple hours and only boated a couple. The wind started blowing really hard so we headed over to the north side of the knolls and found a wind break. We anchored up in 19'-25' (pending which way the wind decided to blow) and had some fairly good success boating 40 between 4 of us. Decided to get off the water at 2:00pm. The ride back to the strawberry marina was rough, one of the roughest rides I have taken accross that lake. I seen 3 boats beached and only two other boats on the water after the wind picked up.

Day 2: Just two of us made it out. We launched in calm conditions but the air temperature was 28*. As the day went on we where hit by a series of storms. We got rained on,snowed on, the wind blew hard, but we did enjoy afew minutes of sun shine in between the storms. We had to move around alittle to find the fish. After we fished 4 different areas we had boated about 25 from 6:00am-4:00pm.

Day 3: Launched at 6:00am air temperature was 22* and conditions where calm and stayed that way untill we decided to leave at 2:00pm. My boat was frozen from the day before, my stearing cables was frozen and my gas lines where frozen along with every thing else. It took an hour to get the 115 hp started and another 2 hours before my 6 hp decided to start working. We stared fishing over by the knolls in 25' of water but after picking up 4 in a hour or so we moved over close to the ladders. After alittle searching we found a large school in 26' of water, we boated over 80 between 5 of us, 2 where rainbows one cutt was 23 inches one was 22.5 with a tail pinch and the average was on the upper end of the slot. That was a great way to finish out our weekend.

Thanks for the report Mike. I am heading up there Thursday and hope it picks up a bit. What worked best for you? Did you ever make it over to Portal Bay? Sounds like a great weekend.

Nice report Mike I sure remember those days at the Berry! I thought I would never miss them but it looks like ya had a real great time of it. I'll bet you had the lake almost to your lonesome. Looked way cold on the boat, did ya have any de-icer? Glad it worked out for ya.

We where vertical jigging 2"& 3" tube jiggs in pearl and root beer. We tried over by C point for less than an hour and only caught a couple. Maybe we could of done better over there if we would of gave it a little more effort.

Great report Mike. A few of us from work tried that a few year back on Memorial day, got 10 inches of snow during one cold night but it had melted by the afternoon, it sure makes for an interesting trip. The difference was we only caught a few compared to your 140 plus weekend. I bet the bugs were not too bad with those cold temps. Did you see any wildlife?

Curt, I don't recall the bugs ever being bad at Strawberry any time of year?

I was headed up there this weekend but the weather changed my mind. I'm glad it did staying in a tent with my wife and kids that would be hell. But it is amazing the conditions we can with stand when the fishing is good.

Kent , you never been there during a major hatch of bugs ? Man it can get intense at times . Damsels will be hatching soon but they migrate to shore but the midges can be any day on the water and watch out for that tiny tan and white winged mayfly that will hatch at sunset . Trout will be rising to them but so will the chub . Good time to fish the surface with a crankbait . But I must admit nothing is as bad as Willard midges . LOL

Nice report Mike . Just go easy on the spawners this time of year . You dont have to rip all there lips .
