Tubin' Yuba 6-1-06
#1
[cool][#0000ff]Launched behind the bridge at 6:30 AM and got out at 11:30 AM. Air temp at launch 38...83 at take out. Water temp at launch 62...66 at take out.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water level was down about 4 feet from spill level. Just low enough for us to kick under the bridge without dragging our rod tips. The swallows didn't like it though. See pics of the swarm and the nests.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Started out kicking down the face of the dam and fishing along the south shore line. Zippo. A couple of light whacks for each of us (me and TubeBabe), but no hookups. Saw very little on sonar. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Saw a boat trolling out in deeper water lose a fish after it jumped. Later saw the boat at the cleaning station with double limits of rainbows, to about 4#. They were trolling Rapalas shallow.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Water was flat calm and very clear. Tried quite a few different jigs and spinners. Worked back over to the north side and started casting along the edge of the gravel dropoff. WHAM! First rainbow. About 16". Fought like a demon and jumped several times. Love those Yuba bows.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Got another about the same size a few minutes later. Hollered at TubeBabe to move over to where the action was. By that time a light breeze had come up from the east...a fishing riffle. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]For the next hour or so we had constant interaction with Yuba's rainbows. We had hits on at least every other cast. We landed maybe 20 between us, and "longline-released" about twice that. We both lost fish over 4 pounds that simply leaped and cartwheeled until they threw the spinners back to us. Fun, fun.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]We only kept the fish that were bleeding and when we each had four in the basket we kicked back under the bridge to our vehicle. Before we got out, I tried a few casts with my spinner inside the spill channel. Found a school of willing perchies and caught several on my spinner before dragging out and heading for the cleaning station. Biggest I brought to the tube was about 10 inches, but I had a couple on that felt bigger. Hope the perch are doing well all over the lake.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I fished shallow and deep with a variety of lures today, in hopes of finding a stray walleye or northern. Nada. I did see a couple of schools of small fish (on sonar) in about 15 feet of water that were probably perch. I was busy with trout at the time and did not stop to play with them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Caught fish on both chrome and brass blade spinners today, but the brass was decidedly the most popular...especially with some orange on the blade or the single hook tied tail. The fish would often bump the retrieved spinners several times before climbing on. It took discipline to keep reeling until we felt weight.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Most of our fish came from about 20 to 30 feet of water, but were all caught in the upper 10 feet of the water column. Shallow trolling is the ticket if you are in a boat. If you are casting, let your lure sink a few feet and then reel about medium speed.[/#0000ff]

Nice trip Pat! I was really jealous when you mentioned you were headed to Yuba. I would love to nab one of those northerns one of these days. Someday.

I'm working on a possibility of early next week doing a Lincoln float in the morning....the possibility mind you. How does that sound?

[cool][#0000ff]At this point, I have a pretty full dance card for next week. Monday would be the only morning I could make it. Tuesday I need to be north, Wednesday I work with the Youth Fishing Program and I am doing two days at Starvation and Pelican on Thursday and Friday. (tough duty)[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]If you can make Monday work, PM me and we will work out details.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for the Yuba report. You sure hit that right! I was considering Starvation for the weekend - let us know of any suggestions.

[cool][#0000ff]As you know, the fish do move around down there. But, our last two fish came from easy casting distance from your favorite spot on the rocks. You might have to fight off the swallows and the rock squirrels though. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I tried white and red and white and pink today without any hits at all.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]I haven't heard any REAL reports on Starvation recently. I am planning to hit it myself next Thursday...Pelican on Friday.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Most folks fishing Yuba right now are catching trout. Haven't been many of the bigguns yet. I probably won't be hitting Yuba again until maybe late September. The 16 inchers we got today will be 20 inch brawlers by then.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Until the fish turned on about 9:30 today, I was kicking myself for not fishing Deer Creek. Good reports there and Pineview too. With this warm weather both of them will break loose this weekend...along with the power squadrons.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Throw that big piece of iron back up under the bridge. There is about 8 feet of water under the bridge and I saw quite a few fish on sonar along the bottom in the shade.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Might also be a good place to soak a minnow.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good luck. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Mona has plenty of fish...with big scales. Mona golden bass. No bucket biology for this kid. As they said in "Jurassic Park", Nature will find a way. After a couple of years with water in it, there is liable to be almost anything show up in that pond.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks RF & TKB. It was a nice day and it is always nicer when the weather is settled and you can catch a few fish too.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]The abundance of the smaller but healthy fish makes me believe that the late fall is going to be gangbusters. When the fathead minnows start swarming the rocks around the dam again the predators will follow and the fishing will be easy. Watch for me to be there to play with them.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Now, it's summertime and the Tubin' Express has lots of other ponds to prospect.[/#0000ff]

Thanks for the update on Yuba, those are some nice ones. The boat as been hooked up to the truck since yesterday and waiting, but I'm sure all of you know that family matters come first. It sounds like brass or gold will be the color, maybe tomorrow.
