I know OFF works and I use it when I need to but my wifey has read some bad things about DEET. Now she's afraid to put it on. Are there any other more "natural" repellants. I want to take her night fishing for cats but she's as stubborn as a mule-eaten alive by skeeters before using DEET.
Just looking for some good ideas or products if they're out there. With the West Nile Virus I should be more careful myself.

The only thing I've heard that worked even half decent was Avon's "Skin So Soft."
Whats so bad about DEET? I hate flippin' skeeters. If they were bigger, I'd shoot em' with a shotgun (not that it would be an efficent way of killing them but it would make me feel better after unloading a box or two throught the scattergun).
DEET would have to be [#ff0000]REALLY[/#ff0000] nasty for me to stop using it.

skin so soft or garlic tablets (for real), I used both in alaska and had great results other than no one wanted to fish near me LOL

I'm not so sure what's wrong with deet but like I said "stubborn as a mule" leaves me looking for other options

Get her a bug suit, specifically one from "The Original Bug Shirt Company." They're based in bug-infested Canada. I've worn these in Alaska, Canada, and the Florida Everglades when the bugs are swarming. All you need to do is Deet the hands and face, and not even the face if you wear the hood up. Not all suits are created equal, but I own Seven sets of these, and don't go fishing anywhere in the summer without them (except mosquitoless Flaming Gorge!). You can wear them in fairly hot weather (80-85), over just shorts and a tee-shirt. Elastic on the ankles and shirt sleeves keeps them from crawling in. Not sure of the web address, but I bet Google knows. Last telephone number I had was 705-729-5620. That's 9 years old. The suits last a long time! I've had some since 1996.
Other than that, its 100 percent DEET (Bens 100), or donate blood.

I copied this for you. I hate mosquitos (design flaw of the earth, next to wind!). I've tried lots of clothes to repel them. THIS ONE WORKS. Believe everything on their website.
And by the way, I've seen those that say skin-so-soft and garlic works for them. That's because the bugs really don't like them all that well. I've also seen grown men cry in Alaska and Canada, when they were fishing with me and using some wives-tale concoction like Avon or garlic. It depends on the person. I had guides who never needed Deet when I was covered in the stuff and still swatting them away.

I've always been told the only repelant that works is stuff with DEET in it. Even the news has said it. I've had bugs eat the heck outta me with Skin-So-Soft and other stuff like that, but never touch me with deet. The risks of using deet aren't as bad as the risk of West Nile.

I have heard that original bounce dryer sheets work well. You take a sheet and put it through a button hole by your neck.
I have not tried this though, but it was in backpacker magazine.

a bottle of hand sanitizer is about 95%efective or better. the more you use the better it works good luck

Has anyone used the device that Thermocell makes? Sportsmans Warehouse said they have a hard time keeping them in stock, so I would assume it works great, it is supposed to repel 98% of mosquitoes in a 15 ft area. From what I have read the military has used this as well.

Ocean- yes, Utah Lake. Last time I was there I was being eaten alive while carrying my toon to the water, I had to run back to the truck to get some OFF. Was that lemon thing in the sports section of Wally World?
