I can't remember your names, I think you said "Coot" and "Old Dog" but this pertains to your fishing trip on Saturday and our little talk at the north entrance gate at Willard Bay. I just wanted the both of you to know that as luck would have it I located your wakeboarding "pals". I gambled after we talked and thought that if I was going to get lucky it would be at the south marina. I was just getting ready to leave and give up when a guy asked if I would check off his fixit ticket, bow numbers not correct, when he got his boat out of the water. I said sure I'll wait for you, being the nice guy that I am. Just about then low and behold the boat "Moomba" comes into the marina. I spoke to them about speed and proximity, as you requested, and told them that without a shadow of a doubt I knew that they were at least 60 - 75 feet away from your boat. He looked at me kind of dumb and then I explained the whole planer board scenario with him and that your lure was at max 160 feet away from your boat. I also told him, as I told you, that he was responsible for the wake and any accidents that were caused from it like capsizing another boat, someone drowning from falling overboard, etc. He did apologize for his actions and he told me that he would ski away from the dike from now on and let the fishermen have fun. Time will tell. I almost forgot to tell you. I have no idea how that boat ran after taking your lines. When I showed the kid the line wrapped around the prop, his exact words were how were we able to go. It was a sight. I was even hoping that I may get your lures back but you only get lucky once a day I guess.
For any one else that reads this, they reported to me a wakeboarder that was too close. They did an excellent job with there camera. These 2 guys made it so easy to know that I had found the right boat. If you encounter the same problems as they did a picture works great, bow numbers, etc. I will do what I can but if I don't see the violation I can't cite them with out a signed complaint from you. A signed complaint means that you may have to go to court if they fight the citation. I will always do what I can to make the waters at Willard Bay just a little safer for all users.

[red] Hello utahsteelheader, Congratulations on finding the right boat. I commend you for your actions and making the boat owner aware of his wrong doing. [/red]
[#ff0000] I never did understand the attraction of running your boat and towing a skier that close to the rocks. Seems like a suicide mission to me, but i guess that I don't have the skier mentality, Thank God. Keep up the Great work, and I for one will keep my camera in the boat from now on.[/#ff0000]

I asked this guy what the attraction to ski, tubing and wakeboarding along the dike was and his response was that it is calmer. I also do think it is a little bit of a thrill to show off for other boaters.

I use to ski quite a bit, and the reason boats like to ski close to shore is to get glass like water when you do your cuts when you are on one ski. Any bit of riffle in the water can cause problems. Thats why skiers look for coves and loop around close to shore over and over. But if I ever saw people fishing, I would stay away from that area. Maybe because I fish also. Anyway, just thought I would throw that out.

Being both a Wakeboarder and a Fisherman, I totally understand the ongoing unspoken skier/fisherman feud. So when I'm out wakeboarding and see a fisherman, especially in a small boat, we usually steer WAY clear of him (even farther away than 150 feet) because I know first hand exactly what its like to be in a 14 foot aluminum boat when a wake monster comes by at 20 mph full of ballast! If it doesn't fill the boat with water, it usually tosses everything around at a minimum, including small kids who are usually fearing for their lives! In the same breath, when I am out fishing, I generally try to avoid those places that Wakeboarders and skiers like the best...except that sometimes it is the same calm shoreline! That is when what I call the "Fisherman/Skier etiquette agreement should come into play. It goes something like this: "If I'm here first, go somewhere else to play". Thats kind of the way it is with Skiers and Skiers anyway....sort of an unwritten law. Why should it be any different just because its a fisherman and not another skier?
My .02 cents.

I used to N.ot have E.nough T.ime O.ff to go fishing. Then I retired. Now I have less time than I had before. Sheesh.

Thanks for lookin' out for Old Coot. I can see both perspectives, but when I am boarding, I try to swing a wide birth around the fishermen because I have been on the recieving end of an inconsiderate boat too many times.

We spend alot of time fishing Willard Bay and really appreciate the efforts of the law enforcement personel out there. Willard Bay is a big pond with alot of users, but I never can figure out why the go-fast crowd has to be where the fishing is the best.

[#002850]Jeff,
We sure do apprecitate someone in athority listening to us and seeing what you could do ... good on ya.
Earler, these guys passed by us at wake board speed several times. Each time I motioned for them to move away. Every time they got closer and closer. Finally, the last time there were three fishing boats passing by in the same area just south of the light pole. These wakeboard weenies come blowing right between us about 60 feet away. Just then the skier fell and the boat made a sharp turn to go around us to pick up the skier. In their turning, they collected all but one of the 4 lines we had out. They got away with three spools of fire line and two Lukcky Craft lures. Bait_caster and I had a few words with them and them I left for the day ... too mad to continue fishing. Besides, they had my best most expensive wiper lures and our reels were spooled.
I am told that many of these weenies think us fishermen want to see them up close do their self serving stunts. I, for one fisherman, have absolultely no desire to watch the inconsiderate jerks entertain themselves. I don't care if they do it, I just wish they would obey the 150 foot law and use more consideration to others.
Thanks again Jeff ...[/#002850]

Coot, thats too bad you lost abunch of gear today with them guys. I just about had a run in with that same boat last time I was out there. Lucky for me Their skier fell and they decided to switch skiers before they ran into me. The were coming strait at me from behind, but they only got to about 100 yards out or so. Kinda makes you wish you could fight back with a little vigillante justice, such as .44 mag in the hull, or take Paul's technique of tying on a huge trebble hook and trying to snag their skier! I sure am glad to see that you were able to get some photos of them and talk to park ranger. That is awesome that we have a ranger on the board now. At least if they don't get caught on the water Jeff will be aware and able to watch for these guys next time out, and sooner or later they will get caught.

It was good seeing you too Coot, sorry to hear about your run-in. This problem has only gotten worse. Its not like there's a lack of room out on Willard either. Why are they compelled to get so close? Petty and I had similar "close call" run ins last weekend (minus the loss of gear) and they seem to come closer and closer with each trip. Many thanks to utahsteelheader for taking the time to address these issues.

I'll be honest its not any different but when a boat is well within 150 feet as this one was then there is a problem. Thre was no question about it this boat was well with in that distance. It was easier to determine that with the info and the line wrapped around the prop than if it was a skier. I can see both sides and to be honest during that wlleye tournament just a week ago, on Saturday, a fisherman and I had a discussion about the 150 feet law as I was towing a boat. I try to be as fair as I can but everyone has as much right to the water as the next guy but if a fishermen is trolling, obviously at below a wakeless speed, and a skier comes by above a wakeless then I am sorry the skier is at fault. I don't want to start an argument about this; I just wanted to let the two guys know that I had spoken to them. I tell the skiers the same thing when I talk to them. You have a problem with another skier, fishermen, waverunner, Call.

[#0000ff]Last month I think about the 13th there was a small green aluminum fishing boat that was capsized close to the North Marina by a large Bayliner. The people in the Bayliner didn’t even stop to help or see if anyone was hurt. The fisherman swam, pulling his capsized boat all the way back into the marina. When I saw him I helped him with his boat, he said they lost ALL their gear with the exception of one tackle box. He pointed out the Boat that had latter came into the marina that had capsized them. The cowards didn’t even come over to apologize or take responsibility, they just turned around and went back out, I guess to get another fisherman. [/#0000ff]

I am not real familiar with that incident, so I wish I could help you find out what happened. I can check and see. I was off for a week in May right around that time. Wife was in Colorado so I had to be around for my son. Didn't mind he wanted to go fishing but no luck. I went to Willard twice with him over that time and now when I say I am going fishing at Willard he jus says good luck. I think now that it seems more consistent is when I should take him. As far as a phone number, the best one when you are on the water to reach us is 435-734-9494 or especially in a case like that 911. We dispatch right through Box Elder and when some one is in serious trouble don't hesitate. We also monitor channel 16 which is a marine band emergency channel. I wish I could say all monitor it but the bad part is people use it like a CB and it gets a little irritating listening to what should be on a telephone. I would say that 90% of the time I do monitor it so try that and if not call 911.

I just noticed something with the picture of the boat and I think I can clear up some questions I have received on the bow numbers. Just so all of you know last week the boat that is in the picture received a ticket for his bow numbers. He told me this when I was talking to him about this incident and the other ranger at Willard who wrote the ticket confirmed it. Okay, if you look at the bow numbers on this boat the style is okay but look at how hard it is too actually see them. It is next to impossible to see the black numbers on a dark blue background. White block style letters would be just fine. I hope that clears the bow number issue up a little.

[cool]Wow, are you a State Park Ranger then for Willard? If so, then it's great to have one of you guys as a BFT member, and a Ranger that actually gives a rip about the obnoxiously annoying ski boats out there that piss so many of us off time and time again!
