Lindon report
#1
Took the toon to lindon last night with the intentions of pulling a late night cat fest. Hit the water about 7ish and headed north out of the marina. Had a few pop and drops right off the bat but no hook ups. Finally while I was rebaiting one rod the other started ripping line. I let the fish run for a while and finally got the hard good hook set. The fish came in pretty easy and I figured just a small channel, that was until it got under the toon. Then all heck broke loose and he kept stripping drag and running between my legs under the toon, spun me around several time. Definately the best fight I've had in a while. When he finally came to the net it was a nice 6lb kitty that had manage to swallow my circle hook all the way to his butt hole, thought that wasn't supposed to happen with circle hooks.
Things were going great up until dark, I had hooked and released a few smaller cats and the bite seemed to be picking up; then right after dark the swarm of bugs that had been gaining members over my head all of a sudded decided to attack. Now the typical UL and willard bugs I can handle. I don't mind a few crawlers and bugs flying in my ears and nose, but this was like a remake of The Birds. I have never experienced anything like it, millions of bugs crashing my face from every angle. I quickly pulled in both lines and made a bee line for the harbor. The bugs were so bad that I had to stick my face in my shirt to even breathe. Once inside the harbor the bugs seems to return to a tolerable swarm. I ended up taking the 6lber home for dinner and releasing the rest, all fish were taken on carp meat.

Way to go on the 6 lber . Too bad about the bugs . One thing about circle hooks is you must not set the hook like normal . Just let the fish pull it tight and reel . No hard hook set and it should hook in the mouth but not always is my experience .

[cool][#0000ff]Glad you found some action, but sorry that some of the action was of the buggy kind.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I never leave home without my trusty head net anymore. Too many times on Willard or Utah Lake when the buzzy buggers suddenly swarm all over ya. You can spray down for the skeeters and get some relief, but when the midges and other winged warriors descend all you can do is try to keep them out of your head orifices. I hate to go off my diet by swallowing several pounds of bugs.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]How about the water weeds? It was about this time last year that those big patches of aquatic vegetation started blooming up all over the place. Made it hard to fish in some areas. Carp condos.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Let me know when you are ready to walk on the Wild (West) Side. We can find a time when the wacko element is not so plentiful if you can get some time midweek.[/#0000ff]

The aquatic vegetation is just coming to the surface. You can see it pretty much everywhere in water less that 5 feet deep. I went out wet (without waders) and having been the victim of swimmers itch before got pretty nervous and headed out into deeper water. I tried to fish along the outside edge of the mats. You could see the veg on the sonar in deeper water, but it hadn't broken the surface yet. Made it pretty tough to drag weightless bait in the bottom. I ended up floating bait over the top of the veg with a bobber. I think the cat action would have been better in around the vegetation, but I couldn't risk another round of the itch.
On another note, mid week might be a possiblilty in the late afternoon one day, but my weekend fishing will be put on the back burner for a while. I work next weekend, have a wedding out of town the next weekend and work the weekend after I get back. I'm not really looking forward to my fishless marathon, but I'll make it through. I work close enough to Jordanelle I've got some tenative plans to hit it up after work one day soon maybe we can hook up there one evening.
