10 ft sturgeon w/ picture

Sure wish I had caught it but thought I would share the picture. My wife and I were coming back from a vacation to Alaska and we stopped by at the fish hatchery below Bonneville dam on the Columbia river. They had a couple of these big fish plus some 10 lb rainbows in the pond. I did not get any digital pictures of the bows. WH2

Nice. I believe some man went "nuts" a few years ago and jumped in that holding pond with a butcher knife and killed many of those large sturgeon.

That guy must have been nuts to kill one of those great fish, the pre-recorded message at the site says the 10 footer is 165 years old.

I love that place. Those fish in the hatchery are awesome! Every year I'm up there I stop and get like $20 in salmon jerky. Great stuff.

One year my dad got to help reel in one of those monsters where everyone fishes. That fish went 112". Huge fish. The guy who handed my dad the rod had him on for better than an hour before that.

Good Morning Lundman,
I am going to be at that hatchery on Saturday, I have been there once before, but didn't know about the windows. How do you get to them? Is the dam right there at Bonneville, or is it further down the road? I would appreciate any info you can provide.

I will admit it has been pre 9-11 since I have been their but you drive acrossed the front of the first section of the dam. I sure there are signs to the fish ladders/fish viewing room. There is a large parking lot above the entrance - then you actually go down 3 or 4 floors in an elevator to the fish counting room.

John Day Dam also has a great viewing window but no fish hatchery - still a great break to see a few summer kings.

There is a tank in Buhl Idaho that had a 13'er and a 12'er till someone poisoned them about 6 years ago. There were also some 20# bows and hybrids in there. If anyone is ever up that way, I believe it is Clear Springs Fish Hatchery, and it is only 1/2 hour from Twin falls. Well worth the drive.
