Flaming Gorge ?'s
#1
My girlfriend Wendy and I are going to the Gorge for OUR FIRST TIME EVER!!! I'm so excited I can hardly stand it. Its also going to be her first time in a tube and her first time actually fishing for herself. Does anyone have any pointers for fishing the gorge as far as picking up smallies right now? I usually fish plastic minnows or rattletraps for the smallies but haven't really fished for them yet this year. I kinda know where I'm headed because Leaky has given me a couple spots to try based on his past experiences. Also, he said something about fishing for catfish in the shallow bays... has anyone else tried this? Will they hit cut carp meat as well as worms? If Wendy and I want to shorefish for trout, is there a particular type of powerbait that anyone has used with great success? I just want it to be a good getaway for the two of us and I'd like to be able to put her on some good fish as well while we're there... who knows, if she gets into smallies or some good cats, she may just want to go fishing with me more.... this could lead to future trips as well. [cool] Any info you guys could throw me would be great since, like I said, I've never actually been there before... thanks folks.

Smallies in FG? Man now I've heard it all!! Man,, now all you peeps are trying to steal all me Mac feed! Oh wait, thats those dang Kokes! My bad!!

Seriously tho',, smallies are just about any where you find a rocky shoreline, and when all else fails toss a crawler[Wink]
Whats more, those little smallies have NO PRIDE at all. They'll even take Play Dough, right 3M? [laugh]

3" grubs in the rainbow trout color are deadly for the smallies along any rocky shorline.
Rainbowpowerbait from shore. If you are tubin though I would throw on a 3"in tube jig in white and tip it with a crawler, and jig off points in 30-40ft for bows, and chances are you will also pick up a few macks doing that. I have never had too much luck on the cats there. When I am there I am after the salmonoids. [Smile]

For smallmouth throw 3" tubes on 1/4 oz heads. Any crawdad color will work. (amber fleck, green fleck, chartreuse, pumpkin fleck, brown fleck). There are more fish in the Utah end, but bigger fish in Wyoming.

3" grubs on 1/4 oz heads will also catch plenty of smallmouth - same color types.

well good luck on the cat's thay have been real tufff this yr unless you have had a few yr's under your belt thay are just tuff too find your best bet would be to hit the black's fork or fire hole for the cat's but the bass are all over fished for them yesterday and caught around 50 but a ton of small one's but we did get a 3.12 and a 3.6 that werent bad useing crank bait's,and 4'' watermelon tube's on a 1/8oz head for a slow drop use a slow retreave and fish 15+ft for the bigger fish you should have a ball good luck Fish.......

I'd post your question on the tubing board too. Make sure she tries out the tube first with no fishing gear and gets accustomed to using it before throwing a rod and tackle in the mix.
