Me and my girlfriend made it up to amethyst lake. and for those of you who dont know that is in an area of the High Uinta Wilderness Area. it is a 4.5-5 hours hike up into the stillwater drainage area. fishing the stillwater stream was fun. lots of takes, and the scenery is unmatchable. got to fish in about 3 spots before the hike started going uphill. and by uphill i mean 45 degrees or more. it was a grueling 4 hour acent entering into a vast meadow with a very deep stream going through it at the top. this is wear we decided to make camp, bad idea perhaps. well camps set up so i decide to hike the 5 minute walk up to wear the lake was. word can only describe so much, but the water was rippling with trout. so i tie on a mosiquito pattern i ties the night before and casted out, soon as the fly hit the water it got snatched by a fish. a 2 incher, haha. fishing is steady and fast for about 2 hours when i hook into a 14 incher. seeing as how i was not only having food but catching dinner i decide thats good enough and head for camp. cook up the fish and eat it with some ramen noodles. very good combo. i fish the stream by our camp and catch several more small brookes then call it a night and head for the tent. after we shut the lights off and quit down for bed a large animal visits our tent. rumages through some stuff, growls a little, circles the tent, then heads away. my girlfriend had slept through most of the racket, but woke up for the last bit. being a girl she had to know what it was making the noise. i say she doesnt want to know, and she insists on me going out there. so i grab the light and a knife(as if it would help me) and step out into the meadow. shine the light across the meadow and catch the last fleeing rear end of a bear. it caught sight of me and fled into the woods. go back inside tell her i didnt see a thing and to go to bed. woke up in the morning saw deer, racoon, moose, and bear signs all over our camp area. packed up and headed out. it was a good trip if you ask me. and i know the bear encounter could have been avoided.

The one time I did that hike I wasn't in good shape and it kicked my butt! Constant uphill and just when you think it will never end you pop out into that beautiful meadow. I've never been more glad to see flat ground!
As for the bear, your story is a good reminder about taking the proper measures to keep bears away. Good thing he ran off and didn't try to go in the tent!

Sounds like you had a good time. I once had a grizzly cub walk 5 feet in front of me while I was hiking in the Tetons. Scary stuff cause I have no idea where mama bear was.

Than about 3 years ago took teh wife on a simple overnighter up there. All i can say is WOW it that trail kisks some serious butt. But the view is deffently worth it.

Thanks for the report . Remind me not to night fish there . Sounds like you lucked out this time . I must admit , I would like to get a bear shot with the old camera but I'm sure the bear is faster than me now . So I'll keep my distance . Mt lions at least let me know if I am crowding them by their bone chillin' scream at 2:00am . Just ask my buddy that doesn't go night fishing with me no more . No guts no glory . Now I walk the night alone when I go . The hospital has sent me home with "Mono" , so I'm stuck at home healing up this week . I'll be fishin' again soon , just can't kiss my fish no more . LOL

Guess you decided on not going to Fox/Crescent lakes then, huh?
Ya, that is pretty nuts what happened with the bear. Hopefully that bear isn't 'trained' now. Often, once a bear realizes that humans=easy food, then they become a nuiisance and they seek out humans instead of running away, which means injury and death to other people.
Glad you had a fun trip though.

I'm glad to hear that Amethyst is still reliable for fast fishing. I've made the trip a couple of times, and found it to be one of the better lakes, year after year.
