WHITE KING IN KODIAK
#1
Just got back from the beautiful and very green Kodiak Island in Alaska. What a great place. Bears and fish! What more could you ask for. I took a friend of mine who has lukemia and two other friends for a week in Kodiak. We had a great time and all I can say is I want to go back. We caught many silvers like the one below. They are bigger here than anyplace I have been in Alaska. Many were over 15 pounds.

We would go out in the charter boats and catch silvers and kings all day long. What an amazing place with puffins and whales all around you. I caught one of the rare "white king salmon" thus making my handle of "chinook" even more appropriate. The flesh of a white salmon is pure white and they say is even better than other kings. We also fished the rivers where there were thousands of pink salmon to catch on flies and many harder to catch silvers. Here I am holding a large silver caught on a pink fly that I tied before the trip. What a rush when the fish tears out 100 feet of line.

We caught our limits of halibut on several days and my buddy that is sick caught the biggest one at 105 lbs. We caught many halibut in the 40 and 50 pound range.

Even though it rained alot, we had a great time fishing on the ocean and fly fishing the rivers. Our only regret is that we did not see a Kodiak Grizzley. Maybe next time. You all should get away and experience the wonders of Alaska. For my frined Larry, it was his first time and he will never forget it. I pray that it won't be his last. Life is too short to sit around on the couch. Get out and fish.

MAN!!!! I'm envious! I love Kodiak!! I have been there the last few years...but unfortunately, I will not be going this year.[Sad] I have caught 2 of the white Kings . Our friend and guide told us that about 1 in every 10 caught off of Kodiak has the white meat. It seems to be a bit oilier than the orange meat on the typical King, which is probably what makes it more flavorful to most people. In the second photo...the one with you holding the Silver. Is that on the Buskin River with Pyramid Mountain behind you? Sure looks familiar! Thanks for sharing your pictures and report. It took me back, for the moment, to the most beautiful place on Earth!

That's great! I've been to Alaska several times and it's killing me to not go this year. I've wanted to go to Kodiak for a while now but haven't made it yet. Next year I hope!

My friend just got back from Sitka and he also caught a white King.

There's nothing more fun than Silvers on a fly!

If there was a prize for guessing where I caught the silver on a fly you would definitly win. Very impressive. I would never have guessed someone here would know where I was standing. You do know Kodiak and the Buskin River. What a great river. I would love to fish it later in September when all the silver get thick. There were a million pinks in there this trip. Had to fish around the pinks to get a fly to the few silver that were in there. Congratulations Ryno, you are the winner.

YAY!!! I won! Is my prize an all expense paid trip to Kodiak???[Wink][Tongue]

Those Kodiak Silvers are definately bigger than any I have seen elswhere in Alaska. If I can figure out how to post pics, I will post a pic of my wife holding a Silver she caught that went over 20 pounds. This one was caught on the Pasagshak River. Another GREAT river with huge fish. And here's a pic that we took on the Buskin, probably right where you too were standing!

Thanks. We still need to hook up on the Berry. Keep my name handy for gas sharing when you need an extra body. Maybe I can get some salmon smoked to have on board. I have not been up to the berry since early July. It's time to get serious.

Nice pics Ryno! That silver is huge! We went to the Pasagchak river and we timed it poorly because the incoming tide made the river cloudy and we could not get the few silvers to bite. You are standing the exact spot we fished. Imagine that. It is called the "Pump House" hole on the Buskin. What a coincidence. Looks like a good haul of silver for you. There must of been more than just you and the wife. I still can't believe that you posted a pic standing in the exact spot. Amazing.

That was a great day on the Buskin. We had a group of 8 fisherpeople fishing that small stretch of river that day. We had our limit in about an hour. It was two years ago...almost to the day. The Silvers came in earlier than normal that year, prompting ADF&G to open that stretch of the river earlier than normal. A nice bonus indeed.... not to mention it's close proximity to town! As you said, there were THOUSANDS of Pinks in the river. But below them in the holes sat the Silvers. If you could get a fly or some eggs below the Pinks, hold on! Hopefully, I'll be going back next year.

We fished all the road system rivers on our own. We fished the Buskin River, American River, Olds River and the Pasagshak River. The days we went on the ocean was with charters. One of the guys was Dave Olsen and he was very good. His boat is Miss Suzie. Also, we went with Roger Alabaugh, Dutchman Charters. He was good also. I hope this helps your planning.
