My wife and I made a quick trip to Lake Powell, to try out the new-to-us Trophy boat and get in on some hot striper fishing. We had a blast. We stayed at the motel at Bullfrog to keep things simple ($106 / night). Friday afternoon 8/25 we got in about 2 1/2 hours of fishing just north of the Moki Canyon mouth, and caught 14 nice stripers, Saturday we fished about 7 hours and added 30 more, then we went out one last time before heading home, and got another 20. Almost all were nice 2-3 pound fat fish, a few were much bigger but very skinny and not worth filleting. The fish were quite a bit deeper than usual, like 80 to 90 feet, and close to the wall. A short-lived storm came through Saturday with strong winds and a little rain, but we just went out into the lake and bobbed around until it blew over, and the Trophy was right at home in that stuff! If anyone wants some fast fun fishing, now's the time to get down to Powell and dunk anchovies, and/or catch a bunch of the smallies around structure with your regular bass getters. They're hot too, but we didn't try for them this trip. For all the info you could want, visit www.waynesworld.com and check out the bulletin board, anglers page, etc. There was almost no wait to launch / retrieve and there weren't TOO many maniacs out there. After Labor Day things really slow down, and even the motel rates go way down. You can stay at either Bullfrog (Defiance House) or Ticaboo, about 12 miles from Bullfrog. Both are operated by Aramack now and have the same rates. Last year it about $65 / night at Ticaboo at the end of September. Of course most people just throw in the tent etc. and camp on a beach. Or sleep in the boat if you have a cuddy and know how to anchor.
