prop Help
#1
I don't know if anyone will have any info for me or not, but I thought I would give it a try. I have a 17ft trihull with a 140 horse volvo penta engine and the 280 volvo penta outdrive and as mentioned in a previous post I lost my prop on monday, but the problem is I do not know what the pitch and size were on it and I am trying to figure out which of my spare props will work or if I need to invest in another one. I tried one of the props on strawberry yesterday. It was a 14/21 but it wouldn't even come close to getting me on plane. We did have three fairly big guys in the boat, but on the old prop I had about the same and on willard it hopped right up on plane and went about 32 miles an hour. The other props I have are a kind of beat up 15/21 and a 15/19. I Am wondering if anyone has any advice or experience. The 15/19 is in brand new condition I just haven't tried it, but I don't know if it will have the top end speed, or if I should invest the money in fixing up the 15/21 for more speed,

Good luck I've been fighting the same thing for a long time. My 17 pich prop wouldn't even come close to getting my boat up on plane but my 15 did a better job, but still wouldn't completly get me there. So I finely put on a hydro foil and man what a differents that made. I can go places without taking all day to get there. Let us know what you find out.

Jed,
I'm no prop expert but maybe this will help.

I have 3 props for my 19' 130 hp Bayliner with Merc 1 OD. I have a 15" 17" and 19" pitch. The 19 will only get me to max (4400) rpm at Powell. The 17 is my all round prop and I use it everywhere except Strawberry, when I go to Strawberry I switch to the 15", the 17" will max at 4000 RPM but the 15 will hit 4400. I can change a prop in about 8 min and I always have a new thrust bearing and washer kit onboard.

I would try that good prop at Willard and see how it goes. When selecting a prop you should choose one that will allow the motor to reach max RPM but not over-rev. By the sounds of it you need to drop in pitch to get up on plane.
I didn't go into diameter because this is usally specific to the manufacturer of the OD unit.
Do you live North or South, I've heard good things about Lees in the North, maybe he can help. If your in SLC try Jacks prop and welding, he has many used but properly repaired props, he will probably let you try several with a deposit. (credit card).
