American Falls/Snake River 10/21/06
#1
I had a few extra hours Saturday morning so I went fishing for the first time in over a month.
I first went to the Westside beach at American Falls Reservoir. I was just fishing with bait from the shore. Fishing was slow but there is opportunity to catch a large rainbow or two. From what I saw and caught, most of the fish were 17”-20” but there were a few larger ones. One I caught was even as fat as some of the Henry’s Lake hybrids. I will post a picture of one of the fish I caught when I get my film developed. Surface temp was in the upper 40’s.
I also tried the river below American Falls. The river was very low (about 400cfs). After not catching a fish after 45 minutes I called it a day. I’m sure the river would have been better if I had put in the time to figure it out but the fishing on the river certainly isn’t red hot. The water was 50-51 degrees.

Nice report Brian, were pretty much down to winter flows with the irrigation season done at all our dams. PaliSades is still putting out 2700cfs, but shouldn't be for much longer.

Nice job, Brian, way to make the best of a quick afternoon. What kind of season do you expect from American Fall Reservoir for ice fishing this year?

Conditions in the reservoir should have been more favorable for the fish but I don't think the catch rate will be much better than last year. Guys I've talked to said the fishing was better in 2005 than 2006 so it might even be slower. The chance of catching large rainbows and the short drive from my house will get me out on American Falls' ice this winter.
